The USA Embassy Urges Russia To Respect Georgia's Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
The US Embassy in Georgia has released a special statement after Russian president Vladimir Putin’s visit in Abkhazia, Russian occupied region of Georgia. Through this statement, The United States urges Russia to respect Georgia's Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity.

On 8th August, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Abkhazia, Georgia's breakaway region and assured it of Moscow's military support. His visit coincided with 9th anniversary of August 2008 Russia - Georgia war, war between Georgia, Russia and the Russian-backed self-proclaimed republics of
South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

At a meeting with de-facto President Raul Khadzhimba, Putin said Moscow was committed to building up a joint Russian-Abkhaz military contingent to ensure the security of people in Abkhazia.

Here is what the statement of US Embassy says:

Press Statement
Heather Nauert
Department Spokesperson
Washington, DC
August 9, 2017
The United States views the visit of President Putin to the Russian occupied Georgian territory of Abkhazia as inappropriate and inconsistent with the principles underlying the Geneva International Discussions, to which Russia is a party. The United States fully supports Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and rejects Russia’s recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The United States urges Russia to withdraw its forces to pre-war positions per the 2008 ceasefire agreement and reverse its recognition of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
