US Ambassador - You can count on one hand how many countries recognize the independence of South Ossetia and none of them are in the EU or near Europe

You can count on one hand how many countries recognize the independence of South Ossetia and none of them are in the EU or near Europe, - US Ambassador Ian Kelly told reporters in response to a question about the statement of the former MEP, Italian journalist Giulietto Chiessa, who plans to organize the delivery of a speech by the so-called President of Georgia’s breakaway Tskhinvali region.

“It’s very simple - neither the US nor any member of the EU
recognizes the independence of South Ossetia. In fact you can count on one hand how many countries recognize the independence of South Ossetia and none of them are in the EU or near Europe. Obviously, such a visit would have to be entirely unofficial and would not have any kind of standing”, said the Ambassador.

Giulietto Chiessa has arrived in Tskhinvali together with an Italian delegation to hold an event in memory of the last year’s Amatrice earthquake victims. According to him he will try to invite the ‘President’ to Brussels for speech and report on the ‘Republic’s history and people.

‘It will be difficult to implement this in the nearest months. It will be a scandalous, fundamental event. Several MEPs are ready to back US… We will gather a group of MEPs that will invite the president or foreign minister. I will be very glad if it comes out well,’ Chiessa has remarked.
