US Congressman: Russia must pay a price for crimes against the people of Georgia

“The Russian Bear wastes no opportunity to showcase its evil intentions and flagrant disregard for international law and basic human decency. Just last month, three Georgian citizens were detained by forces in
the Russian-occupied Georgian region of South Ossetia. Tragically, one of the Georgians detained, Archil Tatunashvili, was tortured and ultimately killed while in detention, and the Russian-backed separatist authorities are still refusing to turn over his corpse to his family. Only terrorists and hateful regimes intent on evil would stoop so low as to refuse to turn over the body of the fallen. The tyrannical regime of Vladimir Putin is not satisfied by kidnapping and murdering his own people alone, he wants to bring his tyranny to all the former Soviet Republics and usher in a new dark age of Russian hostile intimidation throughout eastern Europe. This latest egregious move by the Russians in Georgia must not pass in silence. Russia must pay a price for its ongoing violation of Georgia’s territorial integrity and the crimes against the people of Georgia. And that’s just the way it is,” – the Congressman’s statement reads.

As a reminder, on February 22, the occupation regime detained three citizens of Georgia – Archil Tatunashvili, Levan Qutashvili and Ioseb Pavliashvili in Akhalgori. One of the detainees, Archil Tatunashvili, died in prison on February 23. Two citizens of Georgia, who were detained together with Archil Tatunashvili in Akhalgori, have left the occupied territory of Georgia. Levan Qutashvili and Ioseb Pavliashvili are already on the territory under the control of Georgia's central government.
