Georgian government working on amendments against illegal migration
As reported by the Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvil, the Justice Ministry has prepared amendments against illegal migration in Georgia. The new regulations were presented to the Ministers at the governmental meeting.

The PM explained that the reason for issuing amendments to the law on the residence is that some foreign nationals violate the law and benefit from Georgia’s loyal migration policy.

The amendment which needs to be approved by parliament includes
the following articles:

A foreign national must live in Georgia for 10 years to receive a permanent residency permit. The term in the current law is 6 years.

Foreign nationals will be able to receive a temporary residency permit for 12 years, instead of current six years. After six years, if they have no reason to stay in the country, they will again receive the temporary permit of residency instead of permanent residency.

The Ministry of Economy of Georgia is working to raise the $35,000 limit for investors to receive a temporary residency permit. The government will also review the investment limit.

The Georgian PM thanked Georgia’s Minister of Justice Tea Tsulukiani for preparing the package package of legislative amendments in a short period of time.

As Giorgi Kvirikashvili noted, Georgia is open and welcoming country for the tourism, investments and foreign visitors, but it does not mean that the one should use it dishonestly.

“Of course we will stay as open country in the future, but it does not mean that some visitors must use it in a wrong way, forget about the law and illegally extend their stay in Georgia.I think that these legislative amendments are quite important and necessary as long as they provide entry of more qualified foreign investors in the country and simultaneously protect country’s safety too.. I am sure that Georgia’s Justice Minister will make additional explanations on this issue. The discussion about this topic will continue in Parliament of Georgia then,” stated the head of the government.

Giorgi Kvirikashvili believes that the legislative amendments will significantly reduce the possibility of using the law for the one’s dishonest purposes.

In recent years, Georgia’s involvement in the global migration processes has grown significantly. Migration is becoming an increasingly important aspect in shaping country’s socio-economic, cultural, political and demographic outlook.

Efficient management of migration is one of the preconditions to the security and long-term stability of the country; it also represents an essential instrument for Georgia accessing EU Hence, ensuring well-planned policy development and improving migration management is one of the top priorities for the Government of Georgia.

The goal of the migration policy of Georgia is to create, by 2020, a legislative and institutional environment that ensures the state’s enhanced approximation to EU; facilitates peaceful cohabitation of various religious, cultural and ethnic groups, protects migrants’ rights and ensures their successful integration into society.
