International community condemns Syria’s decision to recognize Georgia’s occupied regions as independent states
30 May, 2018
Violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by Assad regime has been strictly criticized by high officials and politicians throughout the world. On May 29, Syria recognized Georgia’s occupied regions Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (so-called South Ossetia) as independent states.

According to the statement released by European Union, Decision of the Syrian regime violates international law.
EU says decision of the Syrian regime violates international law

"The decision
of the Syrian regime to establish diplomatic relations with the Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia violates international law and the principle of territorial integrity as defined by the United Nations Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions," the statement reads.

According to the statement, the European Union fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders. "We remain committed to actively support conflict resolution efforts, including through the work of the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, and the EU Monitoring Mission," the spokesperson says.
Georgia, Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), Russia and Abkhazia

Janos Herman, Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia, has commented about the recognition of so-called independence of Georgia’s occupied regions by Syria.

“Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Dondua acquainted us with Georgia's position. This decision attracted great attention in Brussels. We strongly support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Consequently, the decision of Syria is against the international law and the non-recognition policy implemented by the European Union. The EU will continue to seek ways of peaceful resolution of territorial conflicts in Georgia, "said Janos Herman.

Foreign Minister of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius has also responded violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by Assad regime.

"Lithuania condemns in strongest terms cynical violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by the Kremlin controlled Assad regime. Full solidarity with Georgia. Those behind this yet another blatant violation of international law must face consequences, "- Linkevičius twitted.

Heather Nauert, Spokesperson for the US Department of State has also commented on the recognition of so-called independence of Georgia’s occupied regions by Syria. According to her, the Assad regime’s decision has nothing to do to change the reality or their position on the matter.

“I think in terms of the news why Syria has now recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia, this isn’t a complete surprise to us simply because Bashar al-Assad is propped up by the Russian regime. The Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are integral parts of Georgia. We continue to support Georgia’s sovereignty, its independence, its territorial integrity, within its internationally recognized borders; and the Assad regime’s – we’d call it an ill-advised decision, to say the least – has nothing to do to change the reality or our position on the matter”, said Heather Nauert.
According to NATO, Syria's decision will not affect the broad international understanding

According to the statement released by NATO, Syria's decision will not affect the broad international understanding that Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia are parts of Georgia.

According to the statement, NATO again calls on Russia to take back the recognition of the regions of Georgia and withdraw its forces from Georgia.
International community condemns Syria’s decision to recognize Georgia’s occupied regions as independent states

"Syria's decision will not affect the broad international understanding that South Ossetia and Abkhazia are parts of Georgia. All NATO allies support Georgia's territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. Despite the fact that NATO does not participate in the Geneva talks, we call on all parties to constructively engage and resolve the conflict peacefully within the internationally recognized territory of Georgia," the NATO Liaison Office said in a statement.
Abkhazia, the breakaway region of Georgia

Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (so-called South Ossetia) are the territories occupied by Russia after the Russo-Georgian War in 2008. After the 2008 war and subsequent Russian military occupation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), the Russian government, along with several others, considers the territories as sovereign independent states: “the Republic of Abkhazia” and “the Republic of South Ossetia”. Before Russian occupation, the unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia and the unrecognized Republic of South Ossetia did not completely control their respectively claimed territories.

Both Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) are widely recognized as integral parts of Georgia and together represent 20% of Georgia's internationally recognized territory. Georgia and a major part of the international community (the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, the US, Japan, the EU, NATO, OSCE, Council of Europe) have recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as occupied territories and have condemned the Russian military presence and actions there.
