Candidate for PM’s position Mamuka Bakhtadze vows Georgia to become united, European country

Former Finance Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze has been named as a candidate for the Prime Minister’s post, which became vacant after Giorgi Kvirikashvili's resignation. The decision was made at the meeting of the parliamentary majority held on June 14.

According to the Constitution of Georgia, within seven days after the prime minister’s resignation, the president of Georgia has to nominate a new candidate for the Prime Minister position, selected by the Parliamentary Majority. Following it, the PM designate shall name
his/her Cabinet of Ministers within seven days.

The current PM candidate Mamuka Bakhtadze was born on June 9, 1982. He holds an MBA from INSEAD, Master’s Degree in Business from Lomonosov Moscow State University and Bachelors in Organization & Management of Foreign Economic Affairs from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. He obtained his PhD and BA from Georgian Technical University in Electromechanical Engineering. Mamuka Bakhtadze served as the Director General of the Georgian Railway from April of 2013 to November 13 of 2017. Bakhtadze assumed the post of the Finance Minister in November of the last year.

"The absolute priority of the Georgian government will be implementation of the fundamental reform in the education sector,- Mamuka Bakhtadze said after he was named as a candidate for the Prime Minister’s post.

“I would like to tell you directly that this is the main priority of my life. This is education, innovation and youth. Just motivated, educated, enthusiastic and most importantly, young people who are confident in their capabilities, will lead Georgia's involvement in the list of the economically developed countries. This kind of Georgia is the only offer, having no alternative, for our Abkhaz and Ossetian brothers in order to return them to the unified family. Consequently, large-scale investments in education and the fundamental reform in this sector will be an absolute priority of the Georgian government ", Mamuka Bakhtadze noted.

Bakhtadze thanked the Georgian Dream political team and its leader for their confidence in him.

“This is a great honor, but at the same time, a very big responsibility for me. In the nearest days I will present my vision to the Parliament of Georgia, which will be based on the following basic principles. The first one is to realize the historic choice of the Georgian people and to integrate Georgia into the Euro Atlantic space. Georgian Dream has a great success in this regard and these successes need to be deepened and strengthened. The second one is that we will implement innovative and fundamental reforms in every direction. As a result of these reforms, we will formulate a new economic model with the new fair game rules. Naturally, we will continue to further develop and strengthen democratic institutions," Mamuka Bakhtadze said.
