German media about possible reasons for Merkel’s visit to Georgia
23 August, 2018
As German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Tbilisi today, expectations are high and both the Georgian and German media are speculating about the possible results of the visit. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes that apart from the unresolved conflicts, discussions about economic issues will be a priority. The Georgian economy is known for its improving modernization. The Chancellor will be accompanied by various different entrepreneurs so further development of economic ties is likely to be on the agenda.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says that
Merkel will also visit the Administrative Boundary Line between so called Tskhinvali region and Georgia.

Süddeutsche Zeitung acknolwledges that progress has been made by Georgia in terms of its economy in the last decade, but admits, that it was Germany and Merkel herself who were against the then President of the USA George Bush from starting the process of Georgia and the Ukraine joining the NATO alliance.
The newspaper suggests that Moscow will keep a close eye on Merkel’s visit to Georgia especially because Merkel is expected to subsequently communicate with Russia.

During her three day trip to the South Caucasus Merkel will visit Armenia and Azerbaijan as well. Saarbrücker Zeitung says that the reason why the Chancellor wants to visit Baku is to do with energy issues, gas supplies in particular. Europe is trying to diversify its energy suppliers and Azerbaijani’s natural resources may have a crucial role in this issue.

It is not the first time that Angela Merkel has visited Georgia. She visited the country in 2008 after the August War, but according to some unconfirmed reports Merkel visited Georgia in the 1970s as well. She was a student from the GDR at the time and visited Mtskheta. Local police became suspicious about the girl from Germany and apparently detained her. Merkel had to spend one night in the cell. Well, as this information is not confirmed officially, we have to consider this occasion as the second visit of Merkel to Georgia.
