Another Georgian kidnapped at the occupational line, stays detained
Maia Otinashvili (a mother of three children) was detained in her own garden on the 19th of September. Eyewitnesses claim that she was kidnapped by armed people with masks. On the 2nd of October, Maia Otinashvili was sentenced by the de facto court to pre-trial detention for two months. She is accused of illegally crossing the so-called border into the occupied Tskhinvali region. She is also charged with helping citizens in “illegal crossing of the border” in exchange for money.

Maia
Otinashvili with her spouse and children live in the village of Khurvaleti, Gori Municipality. The village is the Tbilisi-controlled territory, about 50 meters from the barbed wire fence. Detentions and kidnappings regularly take place on the territory. Maia Otinashvili is the fifth woman detained from Khurvaleti.

According to the locals, Russian and Ossetian so-called “border guards” often cross the barbed wire fences to Georgian controlled territory. The situation is worsened by the fact that the Russian Federation violates the Six Point Peace Plan from August 2008 and it hinders the access of the EU Monitoring Mission to the conflict regions.

According to the family of the detainee, Maia Otinashvili was beaten. Maia Otinashvili’s lawyer is not able to visit her in prison. Today on the 4th of October, the detainee was visited by the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The information about the situation of Maia Otinashvili remains confidential.

It is not the first time the Georgian citizens are kidnapped from the villages bordering a so-called administrative border between Georgia and the Tskhinvali region.

Georgian hikers detained in Truso Gorge

Some young Georgian hikers have recently been detained by armed forces in the Truso gorge. They have been accused of illegally crossing the so-called border into the occupied Tskhinvali region. The young walkers headed off on their hiking trip last Friday and arrived at the Truso gorge on the 29th of August. Individuals within the group of hikers were contacted by their parents on Sunday evening before being cut off.

In June a clergyman and the inhabitant of the village of Khurvaleti, which is adjacent to Georgia's occupied Tskhinvali Region (so-called South Ossetia), were detained by the so-called border guards at different places on June 5. The priest Ioane Okhanashvili, leader of the Dirby church, was released afterwards.
