Deadline for the second round of presidential elections in Georgia is December 2

Presidential elections were held on the 28th of October in Georgia. None of the candidates managed to get majority of votes, so the second round of elections is to be appointed.

The results obtained from 1000 polling stations made it clear that the second round run-off will be held,- Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze said at a briefing last night. Preliminary data of the Central Election Commission support now the Chairman’s statement.

According to the preliminary results Salome
Zurabishvili, Georgian Dream-backed presidential candidate, and Grigol Vashadze, presidential candidate of the United Opposition are both leading into the presidential election.

Former Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili won the first round by a razor-thin margin

The deadline for conducting the second round of elections is December 2, - Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission Tamar Zhvania said at the briefing today. As she said, the final results of the elections will be published within 20 days, after which the second round will be held within 2 weeks.

Grigol Vashadze, presidential candidate of the United Opposition, won in the big cities

The latest updates from the Central Election Commission suggest that Grigol Vashadze received a majority of votes in all big cities of Georgia including Tbilisi. In the capital the two candidates went head-to-head for a long time each leading in 5 precincts of Tbilisi. Salome Zurabishvili is winning in Mtatsminda, Vake, Saburtalo, Chugureti and Didube districts, while Grigol Vashadze is leading in Krtsanisi, Isani, Samgori, Nadzaladevi and Gldani, but none of the candidates has more than 50 % of the votes.

According to the results of 44 out of 58 polling stations opened abroad, Grigol Vashadze has also managed to persuade most of the voters there receiving 45.48% of the votes while Salome Zurabishvili obtained 27.16%. In Afghanistan, however, the situation is reversed. There, Salome Zurabishvili obtained more votes than her opponent.

Georgian troops cast ballots in presidential elections earlier, on October 25 at two polling stations. At the polling station opened in Mazar-e-Sharif Salome Zurabishvili received 63 out of total 132 votes, while Grigol Vashadze obtained 45 votes. As for the polling station opened at Bagram airfield,Afghanistan, Zurabishvili obtained 334 and Vashadze - 216 out of total 742 votes.

Shalva Natelashvili nominated by the Labour Party of Georgia

According to the preliminary data of the Central Election Commission, ruling party-backed candidate Salome Zurabishvili received 615 403 votes (38,63%) and United Opposition’s candidate Grigol Vashadze received 601 175 votes (37.74%).

Voter turnout was 46.74% of the total number of voters.
