International media about the runoff presidential elections in Georgia
Although it didn’t hit the headlines, newspapers and broadcast around the world report about Salome Zurabishvili as the first woman who became president in Georgia. This is what they are saying about the presidential runoff.

Le Monde
The French newspaper speaks of a forceps victory that was much clearer than expected. Becoming president is the culmination of the bumpy political career of the former French ambassador Salome Zurabishvili. The ballot far from European standards will likely weaken the legitimacy of the
designated president. Georgia remains a deeply split country, in particular around the person of Mikheil Saakashvili.

RadioFreeEurope
"This was an election that continued the Georgian tradition of vicious negative campaigning and was more about 'voting against' than 'voting for'," says Thomas de Waal, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, calling the election "a grudge match" between Ivanishvili and Saakashvili.

Zurabishvili – although not very popular – won the presidential elections thanks to the backing of the ruling party and huge financial support. Overall the election seems to have passed off more or less in a democratic way. However, the fact that some governmental employees were told who to vote for shows that the election wasn’t as free as one might believe. Politics in Georgia aren’t expected to change in the future as the president has rather a representative role. Although, Zurabishvili is pro-Western she will most probably continue a pragmatic attitude towards the immediate and powerful neighbor Russia.

BBC
Ms Zurabishvili has said she favors balancing Georgia's relations with Russia and the West. Mr Vashadze - who was foreign minister during the 2008 conflict between Georgia and Russia - was seen as more pro-Western.

An expert on Georgia says that Zurabishvili as president has the power to appoint three judges to the constitutional court and a member to the high council of justice. “There is a lot of evidence out there that the current judiciary serves political interests and whoever the ruling party in government is”, says the expert. Thus, with the appointment of three new judges Zurabishvili can tip the balance of power and make the judicial system have more integrity.
