The after-pains of the presidential election in Georgia
Yesterday evening, at a meeting with his supporters in the Philharmonic Hall, the defeated candidate Grigol Vashadze made it clear that he didn’t recognize the result of the presidential elections and called for early parliamentary elections. He is supported by the opposition coalition "Power is in Unity" that has scheduled a protest rally on Rustaveli Avenue on Sunday. Ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who lives in exile, also joined the meeting of the opposition coalition via Skype call.

Today, Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze’s harsh reaction followed. At a press conference, he announced that any attempt of destabilization will be responded by law. The government will not allow revolutionary scenarios or disorder in the country; the government will not allow the Georgian people to be threatened by irresponsible political leaders, - said the Prime Minister.

“Approximately, about two million voters participated in the elections, which once again demonstrates that we have a highly responsible society in Georgia and everyone should respect the choice of the Georgian people," said Mamuka Bakhtadze.

International representatives are concerned

Meanwhile several country leaders and ambassador – among them the EU und US ambassadors – have congratulated Salome Zurabishvili on the presidency and the Georgian people on the free vote.

“We also welcome the assessment of international observer missions that the elections were competitive and the candidates were free to conduct their campaigns. However, we share the assessment that this process was damaged by the unfair advantage of one party and the negative nature of both parties' campaigns," said the Ambassador of the EU Delegation today.

These concerns are shared by the US representatives. “We urge Georgian authorities to address the shortcomings raised by OSCE/ODIHR and other observers, and we are prepared to assist in these efforts,” - reads the statement released by the US Embassy to Georgia.
