Military Importance of Anaklia Port

Military Importance of Anaklia Port
Deep-sea ports allow large vessels and naval ships to anchor on shore… Development of transport infrastructure largely determines a country’s economic strength. The quality of motorways and railway roads are measured by their permeability and the quality of aerodromes is measured by the length of the runway and the thickness of the concrete cover, whereas the quality of seaports is valued by the length and quantity of the berths. The depth of the sea at the port is equally important.

Nowadays,
Georgia has only two seaports in Batumi and Poti, but their depths do not exceed 7-9 meters, which is not enough for tankers with greater water displacement volume or dry cargo ships to get into the port, as well as for servicing cruiser–type warships. During the new port construction works in Anaklia, it was announced that the sea depth can reach 20 meters, which will allow access of any kind of tankers with any water displacement volume to the port; even for nuclear marine propulsions with water displacement volume of 100 thousand tons, which goes 12 meters below the surface of water.

However, according to the Monteux Convention, Turkey will allow neither nuclear marine propulsions nor aircraft carriers in its Black Sea ports, but, on the other hand, cruiser-type vessels, which go 9-10 meters below the surface of the water, will feel comfortable in the Anaklia Deep Sea Port.

Certainly, the Anaklia port is being built as a massive shopping hub, but any transport infrastructure has a double purpose of both civil cargo turnover and military cargo transportation if it becomes necessary.

Recently, there have been massive changes in the Black Sea Aquatoria: first, Russia has refitted its Black Sea Fleet and, secondly, NATO has begun to consider strengthening its own interests in the Black Sea region.

Georgia’s closer ties with NATO means active use of Georgian ports in the Black Sea. For example, loading military equipment, necessary for conducting international military training, from ferries to Georgian land ranges. If a much deeper port of Anaklia is soon added to the Poti and Batumi deep sea ports, it will only benefit Georgia.
But what is beneficial for us is perceived as detrimental for Russia and Turkey. Moscow supports neither economic development of Georgia nor frequent entry of NATO ships into Georgian ports, while Anaklia Port can compete with Turkish ports by attracting its clients.
