The Russian deputy in the Chairman’s chair of the Parliament of Georgia
The Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy is taking place between the 19th and 22nd of June in Tbilisi. Up to 100 members of 25 delegations are visiting Tbilisi within the scope of the event. The parliamentary opposition is protesting against the conduct of the Assembly. The visit of the Russian Delegation to Georgia was also protested by the citizens, arguing that Gavrilov was fighting against Georgians in the region of Abkhazia in the 1990s.

On the 19th of June, the Ambassador of
Ukraine to Georgia left the reception held within the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy in protest when Sergey Gavrilov, the member of Russia’s State Duma, was delivering a speech. Ambassador Igor Dolgov said that he did not want to hear the speech of the Russian official. The Ukrainian diplomat underlined that Russia continues occupying Ukraine and Georgia and it contradicts all international norms.

“I do not have any discomfort, I'm very happy that I'm in my homeland,"the member of the Russian Duma Sergei Gavrilov said.

Gavrilov believes that Russia and Georgia should resume relations in another direction, too.

"I think we should contribute not only to tourism and business but also in culture, and I want to reply to the fake news released by the Georgian media: Gavrilov has never participated in any hostilities in the territory of Abkhazia. It’s a lie,” Gavrilov said.
