Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy canceled following public outrage
The session of Inter-parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy held at Parliament of Georgia has been canceled after the protest. The session was canceled after European Georgia MPs did not allow Russian deputy Sergey Gavrilov to get back to the hall after the break announced at the Assembly session. The move of the opposition MPs caused confrontation. MP Ada Marshania called the above a provocation and demanded that the MPs be removed from the hall.

Akaki Bobokhidze, a member of European Georgia, has
splashed water from the parliamentary tribune in the direction of Russian MPs.The member of European Georgia was irritated by a certain comment of one of the Russian MPs. It is unknown what the MPs have told each other as microphones have been turned off in the session hall of the Parliament of Georgia.

Delegates of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy have left the Parliament building. As a representative of the Assembly stated, the Assembly session will not continue in the Parliament. Zakaria Kutsnashvili, the head of the Georgian delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, said that the session will continue in other building, however, he did not specify the location.

The chairman of the ruling party Mamuka Mdinaradze about the assembly

"I declare with full responsibility that it is unacceptable for the absolute majority of the parliamentary majority to see the deputy of the Russian Duma, Sergey Gavrilov, in the chair of the Parliament Speaker of Georgia. This was not agreed with us. According to the protocol, the session was to be chaired by our Greek colleague, who is the Secretary General of this organization. We will find it out how Gavrilov appeared in the speaker’s chair and the organizers will certainly be held accountable”, Mdinaradze said.

Deputy Chairperson Tamar Chugoshvili about the Assembly

I am devastated by seeing the Russian deputy in the Chairman’s chair, - Deputy Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia, Tamar Chugoshvili, says in her statement posted on Facebook.

"There is nothing harder for me to see than this. I do not know what to say. Every day I think about how to turn the Parliament into a full state institution. I am just devastated by seeing the Russian deputy in the Chairman’s chair", - Tamar Chugoshvili said.

People have recently created Facebook events to call on the Georgian population to gather at the building of Parliament of Georgia and protest the conduct of the Assembly.

The Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy is taking place between the 19th and 22nd of June in Tbilisi. Up to 100 members of 25 delegations are visiting Tbilisi within the scope of the event.
