Russian deputy Sergei Gavrilov in Georgia

The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Sergei Gavrilov, a deputy of the Russian Duma from the Communist Party, was leading the session from the Chairman’s chair in the Parliament of Georgia yesterday on the 20th of June. The parliamentary opposition protested against the conduct of the Assembly. The visit of the Russian Delegation to Georgia was also protested by the citizens, arguing that Gavrilov was fighting against Georgians in the region of Abkhazia in the 1990s. The session was canceled after European Georgia MPs did not allow Russian deputy Sergey Gavrilov to get back to the hall after the break announced at the Assembly session.

The ruling party about the protest

Later in the evening, the ruling party ‘Georgian Dream” apologized for the ‘outrageous’ mistake and promised that the responsible people allowing the Russian deputy into the country and then in the Parliament building would also apologize for the mistake. However, the opposition and civilians called on removing the responsible officials from their posts. The government did not respond to the call.

During the clashes early on Friday, the US embassy in Tbilisi called on all sides to remain calm in their statement:

“We understand the frustrations that many people are feeling today, and we call on all sides to remain calm, exercise restraint, and act only within the framework of the constitution.”

Public defender about the clashes

The Public Defender's Office of Georgia Nino Lomjaria has released a statement today on the 21st of June, saying that the Public Defender and representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office observed the events taking place on Rustaveli Avenue throughout the night and have visited detained demonstrators in various police divisions. The Ombudsman says in the statement that some detained citizens speak about the facts of alleged abuse of power by law enforcers.
