Georgian police used teargas, rubber Bullets and water cannon against protesters
Police in Georgia used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon to stop protesters entering the country’s parliament on Friday. Dozens of Injured police officers, civilians and journalists were taken to the hospital. Two civilians had to undergo enucleation procedure. Law enforcers detained a number of demonstrators.

The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Sergei Gavrilov, a deputy of the Russian Duma from the Communist Party, was leading the session from the Chairman’s chair in the Parliament of Georgia yesterday on the 20th of June. The parliamentary opposition protested against the conduct of the Assembly. The visit of the Russian Delegation to Georgia was also protested by the citizens, arguing that Gavrilov was fighting against Georgians in the region of Abkhazia in the 1990s. The session was canceled after European Georgia MPs did not allow Russian deputy Sergey Gavrilov to get back to the hall after the break announced at the Assembly session.

The ruling party about the protest

Later in the evening, the ruling party ‘Georgian Dream” apologized for the ‘outrageous’ mistake and promised that the responsible people allowing the Russian deputy into the country and then in the Parliament building would also apologize for the mistake. However, the opposition and civilians called on removing the responsible officials from their posts. The government did not respond to the call.

During the clashes early on Friday, the US embassy in Tbilisi called on all sides to remain calm in their statement:

“We understand the frustrations that many people are feeling today, and we call on all sides to remain calm, exercise restraint, and act only within the framework of the constitution.”

Public defender about the clashes

The Public Defender's Office of Georgia Nino Lomjaria has released a statement today on the 21st of June, saying that the Public Defender and representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office observed the events taking place on Rustaveli Avenue throughout the night and have visited detained demonstrators in various police divisions. The Ombudsman says in the statement that some detained citizens speak about the facts of alleged abuse of power by law enforcers.

Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of Parliament of Georgia and Salome Zurabishvili, President of Georgia, suspended their official visits to Baku and Belarus respectively to return to Tbilisi. The meeting of the political council of the “Georgian Dream” about the events occurring yesterday was scheduled at the central office of the ruling party today at 12:00. The session is underway.
