So called elections in Abkhazia go into second round
26 August, 2019
The “Presidential elections” in Abkhazia do not bring a clear leader. Nor are they recognized by a variety of states, among them the US, the UK, Ukraine and Latvia. A total of 9 candidates were running for “president” in the so-called election on Sunday in Abkhazia – the Georgian region occupied by Russians. But the decision who is going to be “president” will follow in a second round between Paul Khajimba and Oleg Arshba.

Khajimba, the actual “president” did get the
most votes (26,6 %), right before the former “deputy foreign minister” Oleg Arshba (24,9%) as the self-proclaimed central election commission notified on Monday evening.

The president of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili condemned “this sham process as yet another violation of our national sovereignty”. And other leaders followed.
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Canada, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United Sates of America do not recognize the legitimacy of the so-called ‘presidential elections’ held in Georgia’s Abkhazia region. They wrote in a statement that they reiterate their full support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.

“We once again urge Russia to fulfill all of its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of its forces to pre-conflict positions and the provision of free access for humanitarian assistance to these regions, as well to reverse its recognition of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states,” the mentioned countries said in a joint statement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia says that the statement was made upon the initiative of Poland.
