Former Russian Duma member sees theoretical chance of solution the Abkhazia problem
Former member of the Russian Duma, Ilya Ponomarev, believes that there is a theoretical chance of resolving the problem of occupied Abkhazia
if the government is able to change the attitudes of the population in the region.

As the former Russian lawmaker says, whatever the solution to the problem of occupied territories in general is, the approach should be different in case of Abkhazia and so-called “South Ossetia.”

“I think that the situation is quite different in South Ossetia and Abkhazia
because those who live there have different aspirations and interests. For example, "South Ossetia" intends to be part of Russia anyway, while Abkhazia wants to become an independent state, which is really the difference in this context. The issue of "South Ossetia’s" aspiration to join Russia has been voiced several times, but so far they have decided not to do so. So I think in fact one and the other will be a frozen topic for a long time. I can hardly imagine what the Georgian authorities can do to change the situation. I would say that the strategy should be different in both cases, since the population of "South Ossetia" clearly wants to be in some kind of relationship with North Ossetia, and the Abkhaz people live more independently. If there is a breakthrough in the attitude of Abkhazians, I don't see any particular reason for Russia to hand on to Abkhazia, ” Ilya Ponomarev said.

The former lawmaker said that while there may private interests in occupied Abkhazia, the region still has no particular geopolitical significance. Therefore, Panamariov says that the Georgian authorities have a theoretical chance of resolving the problem of Abkhazia, but he finds it difficult to imagine “what the government should do to resolve the problem of so-called South Ossetia.
