Statement by Leading MEPs on Gigi Ugulava's Case
The ruling of the Supreme Court in the case of Mr. Ugulava raises questions regarding the procedure, timing and motivation of the decision, MEPs said in a joint statement. The ruling of the Supreme Court in the case of Mr Ugulava raises questions regarding the procedure, timing and motivation of the decision, MEPs said in a joint statement.

“An independent and impartial judiciary that has the trust of the society is an essential pillar
of any democracy. It is also part of Georgia’s commitments within the Association Agreement. Unfortunately, the ruling of the Supreme Court in the case of Mr Ugulava raises questions regarding the procedure, timing and motivation of the decision. It also further heightens tensions in an already difficult political environment in Georgia. The continuation of dialogue between the parliamentary majority and the opposition is vital for reaching a consensus on electoral reform that best reflects the will of the Georgian people. We will remain in close contact with our partners in the Parliament of Georgia during this crucial time for democracy,” reads the statement co-signed by the Chair of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister (EPP, DE), the Chair of the delegation to the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee Marina Kaljurand (S&D, EE) and the Foreign Affairs Committee’s Standing Rapporteur on Georgia Sven Mikser (S&D, EE).

In addition EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell has commented on the arrest of one of the leaders of European Georgia Gigi Ugulava. He said the EU has some questions about the verdict.
“We have been following the case of opposition leader Gigi Ugulava for some time. I had the opportunity yesterday to assess the situation following the verdict together with my EU colleagues. And I want to say that we all share a number of questions with regard to circumstances around the verdict. We also agree that this event is not conducive to the atmosphere needed to move forward on the political dialogue, which, as we know, is a key component and a vehicle that could breach political polarization in the country”, Carl Hartzell said.
According to him, he expects that there will be an official statement coming from Brussels in the coming few hours.

“There have been some statements made by different politicians in Brussels and in some capitals, and I expect that there will be an official statement coming from Brussels in the coming few hours”, the Ambassador said.
