Condition of Georgian Producer Aggravating

Arrested but defiant in hunger strike

Soso Jachvliani, Georgian producer and actor, was among the protesters who were beaten and arrested on Rustaveli Avenue in the night of 26 May. He was transferred to the Republican Hospital due to the deterioration of his health, as it was reported by Shalva Khachapuridze, Jachvliani’s lawyer.

Jachvliani’s doctor is not commenting on the health of the actor, producer and champion arm wrestler, who went on hunger strike over 14 days ago. According to Khachapuridze, the

precarious state of Jachvliani’s health is further undermined by the wounds and traumas sustained as a result of severe beating by Special Forces that night.

Soso Jachvliani denies any wrongdoing and claims that he is imprisoned illegally and is not going to stop the hunger strike.

Journalists managed to get to Jachvliani’s room in the hospital but the guards didn’t allow them to interview him. When they attempted to talk to Jachvliani, they were instantly ousted from the room.

Dima Jaiani, colleague of Jachvliani, producer and actor just like him, says Jachvliani is not going to stop hunger strike and doesn’t permit to talk to him about it.

Gela Nikoleishvili says that Soso Jachvliani is incriminated with minor hooliganism and disobedience to the police. Nikoleishvili asserts that these accusations are concocted and that actually Jachvliani has not broken any rules.

After the arrest, Jachvliani was transferred to the temporary detention center in Mtskheta. It was there where he started the hunger strike.

Soso Jachvliani was detained on Rustaveli Avenue in the early morning of 26 May. During the crackdown on the rally, he was hiding inside the Rustaveli Cinema together with other protesters. He was caught by the Special Forces there. According to the eye witnesses, they brutally beat Jachvliani.
