“Elections Will Be Won by National Movement Again”

Interview with Akaki Bobokhidze, Member of Majority

The start of the New Year is a good time for the assessment of the past year and planning and forecasting the future. Akaki Bobokhidze, Member of Majority and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, anticipates that political processes this year can be more dangerous than natural calamities:

Q: Some say dragon year is characterized by heightened intensity and turmoil. Perhaps the Parliament will also be affected and is

likely to see hottest debates and clashes.
A: This dragon year is the year of elections. Certainly, we are going to have a very active year in Georgia.

Q: Some people predict natural calamities for this year…
A:  political processes this year can be more dangerous than natural calamities. Take the deteriorating situation around Iran. We cannot sit back and relax. However, I do not  expect something new, something extraordinary inside Georgia. I think National Movement is going to win the elections. Accordingly, the opposition will claim a foul play and try to take the issue to streets. Our task is simple but hard to fulfill. We have to ensure that the elections are held in full compliance with law, so that nobody – except the opposition – feels discontent. As for the opposition, it has decided to contest any result.

Q: You look very confident but Mikheil Saakashvili admitted that Ivanishvili is the kind of a rival who forces him to stay in shape all the time.
A: If the opposition performs better in the coming elections compared to the previous ones, the credit should go to the opposition, us and the country.

Q: Bidzina Ivanishvili plans to gain two thirds of Parliamentary seats.
A: The biggest mistake of Bidzina Ivanishvili is that removal of Saakashvili from the office is the main task on the list of his political agenda. That is why he staged the audition of Saakashvili’s enemies. The ideological direction, political position and viewpoints of this or that political force do not matter for Ivanishvili. Such alliances wouldn’t do any good to the country. The current Authorities need to be replaced by the force which would be identified with new and better Georgia. Today rivals of the Authorities are those who have lost former privileges.

Q: You say this about Ivanishvili?!
A: No, not about him – but how is he going to lead the country? If he plans to do it with the help of the people of his team, he will fail outright. Thanks a lot to him for all his good deeds in Georgia in the past but for me the reversal of the Georgia’s course is not worth of a new road or a church.

Q: Where did you take it that the new political force intends to reverse the foreign political course of Georgia?
A: I think Russia intentionally chose Bidzina Ivanishvili to exploit the legend of a philanthropist.
