“Rose Revolution” Failed to Provide Social Justice

Exclusive Interview from America

“This is the last chance for our country to get rid of slavish life and death from hunger. More humane replacement for the Saakashvili’s machine should be sought,” – writes Irakli Kakabadze, one of the Rose Revolution activists, who currently resides abroad. Kviris Palitra newspaper talked to him in America.

A: The Authorities did not live up to our expectations. Rose Revolution failed to provide social justice. When PM Zurab Zhvania was murdered, it became clear that Saakashvili

had formed a neoliberal-oligarchic regime where he gathered a small group of his relatives, friends and party companions. This clan reaps fortunes via banditry. In the Soviet Union stealing of the budget money was informal by nature. In the times of neoliberalism they are registering such operations in the name of private corporations under the umbrella of so called national security doctrine. So called Soviet nomenclature was replaced by liberal military-industrial oligarchy. They leave those with privileges alone but do not spare the others, robbing them without mercy. Take a mother of my friend. She used to be a minor entrepreneur. Nevertheless, they demanded huge sum from her. Of course, she could not pay it. So, they imprisoned her.

Q: Do you think the public should shift the survival vector?  That is, to seek help among its own members?

A: If Ivanishvili’s forces opt for liberal course, he too would certainly engender the same problem as the Rose Revolution did. Today we need not a discourse of silly liberals who are running after the shadows of Giga Bokeria (Secretary of Security Council) and Levan Ramishvili (Director of non-governmental organization Liberty Institute) but pursue the vision of social democracy. We need to develop society based on social justice and equality. Georgian world of political egocentrism and intolerance already has a champion called Mikheil Saakashvili. Let us not compete with him in the play of ‘Who Is More Successful Egoist’.

Today Georgia should replace liberal cynicism and intolerance with love.
