New President of Sports Journalists Association

New President of Sports Journalists Association
On the 25the of May, the premises of Georgian National Olympic Committee hosted the Conference to hear quadrennial report of Sports Journalists Association of Georgia and to elect new officials of the organization. The delegates heard a brief report by the incumbent president Elguja Berishvili who has ably headed the Association for more than ten years. On the panel there figured general secretary of the GNOC Emzar Zenaishvili and editor–in-chief of the oldest sports newspaper of Georgia Tengiz Gachechiladze. Four issues
were on the agenda: general report, financial report, miscellaneous issues and elections. The Association has managed to achieve quite a lot during the reported period, including the publications of books and albums, dedicated to the Georgian sporting life and its long-running traditions, awarding of prominent athletes and providing affordable social care for sports men and women. Four candidates for presidency were presented to the conference, each of them introducing themselves to the participants. One of the candidates Paata Natsvlishvili withdrew his candidacy, having made a comment that his colleague Giorgi Gorgodze would do a better job than anybody else, including himself. The audience appreciated his emotional but very balanced and meaningful speech by Paata Natsvlishvili that could serve as a vivid example of thoughtful attitude to the business of Georgia – refusal from a very prestigious position in favor of a colleague who can presumably provide for better effect than anybody else. I could not believe my eyes and ears that I was in Georgia. Bravo! Finally Giorgi (Gia) Gorgodze received 46 votes out of 81 and won the election by an overwhelming margin. The delegates thought that Gia’s experience in sports and his connections in the field could work only to the benefit of sports journalism in Georgia. There was one point very well made by Paata natsvlishvili and supported by everybody, which concerned the Georgia language in the sports journalism of the country. It was clearly underlined by him that the sports writers and commentators must avoid linguistic mistakes. I would like to openly and enthusiastically agree with Paata that the linguistic absurdities should be eliminated in our journalistic culture if we want to sound like a serious nation, including the language of sports articles, oral comments, reports and public discussions on radio and television. Giorgi Gorgodze has come with his team – two deputies and general secretary of the Association – which was also unanimously approved by the Conference. It is encouraging to believe that the work of the newly-elected leadership of the Association will seriously tell on the future of sports journalism in Georgia. The Sports Journalists Association of Georgia has been functioning since 1959 and counts more than a hundred members, actively cooperating with related international organizations.
