EU Selects 15 Best Projects
The European Union selected 15 Georgian and European non-governmental organizations to implement measures aimed at strengthening the role of civil society in promoting human rights and democratic reform, supporting rule of law and good governance. These organizations have won the Call for Proposals launched in 2012 under the European Union’s ‘Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights’ with a total grant allocation of up to Euro 1 335 000. Head of Delegation of the European Union to Georgia Boris Iarochevitch presented the winners of the Call for Proposals launched in March 2012.
The winners of the so-called micro projects with budgets ranging from Euro 52 000 to Euro 100 000, are the following Georgian non-governmental organizations: “Tolerant” Association of Samtskhe-Javakheti, Global Initiative on Psychiatry Tbilisi, Georgian Centre for Psycho-Social Rehabilitation for Torture Victims, Guria Agribusiness Centre (Ozurgeti), Civil Development Agency (Rustavi), Guria Youth Centre (Ozurgeti), Foundation Accion Contra El Hambre ACF (Spain), Institute of Democracy (Batumi), Union “Step Forward” (Batumi), Association of Disabled Women & Mothers of Disabled Children “DEA” (Zugdidi), Georgian Trade Unions Confederation, Innovation and Reform centre, IDP Women Association Consent, Union of Blinds of Georgia and NGO Parsa.
The winners will implement projects in the following priority areas: Promoting the rights of vulnerable groups (including internally displaced persons, ethnic, religious and others minorities, children, women, persons with disabilities), including their health, economical, social, cultural, labor rights and rights to equal treatment and physical integrity, promote their integration into the society. The next sphere is a support to access to Justice; advocacy and awareness raising of human rights and promoting the ability of civil society to engage in human rights policy dialogue.
Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Georgia Boris Iarochevitch stated in his opening speech:”Our priorities for Georgia are to sign as soon as possible Association Agreement, Free Trade Agreement and to have visa dialogue that will lead to the visa free regime.” Gocha Alexandria, Vice President of Georgian Trade Unions’ Confederation was one of those who delivered a thank-you speech: “It is the first time when we are receiving a grant from EU. The project that will last for 2 years implies strengthening of labor rights and professional rights in Georgia. The vulnerable places are the regions, especially the industrial region of Kvemo Kartli. We have offices in Kutaisi and Ajara and soon will open one in Rustavi (Kvemo Kartli) too”.
The European Union’s Program “European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights” (EIDHR) was created in 1994 following an initiative of the European Parliament. The EIDHR is a funding program that supports and promotes human rights and democracy in non-EU countries around the world.
