Where Disabled and non-Disabled Persons Dance Together
British Council in partnership with the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre held a two-day dance workshop and performances led by the internationally acclaimed Candoco dance company from the UK. Candoco, the first company of its kind in the UK, is a pioneer and world leader – a professional contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled performers. On March 20, Candoco representatives along the partners from the British Council and the Marjanishvili Theatre met representatives of various NGOs and media.
Zaza Purtseladze,
Director of British Council - Georgia presented the guests:
“By inviting Candoco Company to Georgia, we want to underline our commitment to the ideas of equal opportunity. We really want to raise the awareness of Georgian audience and bring their attention to the issues of disability. We also want to prove that disability is not and should not be a disadvantage. “
Pedro Mashado, co-artistic director of Candoco, also delivered the speech: “It’s a big pleasure to be here. It is our second visit to Georgia, but at that time, we were teaching. This visit is special for two reasons: Firstly, we were able to come here in February to teach and that sense of continuity with the people with disability is really good and we are thankful to the British Council. Secondly, it is a very important visit because we are showing the film that was made in 1994. We have never presented this film together with the performances, so there will be a special show in Georgia.”
On March 21-22, Candoco presented an evening of three diverse dance works and the screening of the classic dance film Outside In. Three Acts of Play featured Studies for C, a new duet by award-winning choreographer Javier de Frutos, as well as American contemporary dance pioneer Trisha Brown’s iconic Set and Reset/Reset and the whimsical drama of British dance theatre artist Wendy Houston’s Imperfect Storm. As promised, the evening also featured a special screening of Outside In, directed by award winning filmmaker Margaret Williams, choreographed by Victoria Marks and featuring Candoco Dance Company.
Candoco Company offered excellent and profound experiences to the audience, combining both contemporary dance techniques and creative choreographic tasks. One day prior to the performances, British Ambassador David Moran commented for Georgian Journal: “Tomorrow there will be a big event because we’ll watch one of the Britain’s best modern dance companies. The difference about them is that they are really good but also very special, because it is a mixture of disabled and non-disabled dancers dancing together, which is the main idea; but they are also producing good art. It is not only pleasant to watch the joyful dancing, but also it demonstrates what humans can achieve. It’s about realizing potential, using the talents and showing what all people can do. The limits of what human beings can achieve regardless of who they are and what obstacles they face, are lesser than we think.”
