Paata Zakareishvili – Holy Synod Decision may Raise Concerns in Abkhazia
22 December, 2010

Georgia’s Holy Synod decision to pass Tskhum-Abkhazia Eparchy under ruling of Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia Ilya the II may raise concerns in Abkhazia . The statement was made by conflicts specialist Paata Zakareishvili with InterPressNews while commenting the Synod decision. “This initiative will tease the Abkhaz side. Our Patriarch has a huge authority not only in Georgia but on the entire Christendom. He is respected by the Abkhaz despite the fact that they haven’t been content with his statement. Ilya

the II announced during the War in 2008 that everyone who killed Georgians was committing an irreprehensible sin. The Abkhaz got angry with this statement claiming that those killing the Abkhaz were also committing a sin. They have remembered the words till today. I think that they misunderstood Patriarch’s announcement. His Holiness implied the Abkhaz as well while mentioning the Georgians. This very Initiative will be misunderstood. The Abkhaz will highlight the so called political context instead of its religious one and they will claim that they should be spoken with in a different way”, Zakareishvili told.
The Expert states that Georgian Church may be very serious and significant, still additional circle in conflict resolution. In Zakareishvili’s opinion, Georgian policy, in general, should be changed in relation with the Abkhaz, otherwise such unilateral actions will be non-effective. Moreover, they will discriminate valuable initiatives and resources.
“President Saakashvili doesn’t talk with the Abkhaz and he doesn’t even consider them human beings, stating that they are just marionettes of Russia. This is a key stance of Georgia’s government. Considering such background, the initiatives of similar type will be inefficient and, moreover, they won’t be able to be applied in the future once they have been discriminated by now”, Zakareishvili added.
Georgia’s Holy Synod have decided to pass Tskhum-Abkhazia Eparchy under ruling of Ilya the II and to grant the Patriarch of All Georgia with the title: His Holiness and Beatitude Ilya the II, Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia.
