GREAT GOLD AT CONCOURS MONDIAL DE BRUXELLES
Today, we would like to tell a success story of Georgian wine. Wine is often linked to Jesus Christ, his blood and therefore, it is truly precious to us. On June 27, within the framework of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Winery Khareba at its complex Gvirabi (Tunnel), which is located in Kakhetian town Kvareli, held an awarding ceremony dedicated to the Georgian wines which won Grand Gold Medals. The organizer of the event was Winery Khareba, supported by the Georgian
Ministry of Agriculture and Georgian Wine Association.
This year was unprecedented in terms of the number of registered wines and jury members. 8200 samples from 50 countries were tested by 305 wine-testers during three days. Only 24 were chosen to be granted great gold prizes, out of which 3 went to Georgian wines. Three of them, namely, Chateau Mukhrani’s Reserve du Prince (red wine), Tamada Mukuzani from Georgian company of Wine and Alcohol Drinks (red wine) and Saperavi Premium (red wine) from Winery Khareba received Great Golds. Besides, Rkatsiteli from Chateau Mukhrani received Gold and 6 other wines won silver medals. Hopefully, this fact will boost Georgian tourism and wine tourism in particular.
Davit Galegashvili, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, said: “Such contests promote wines globally. This year, our government makes particular emphasis on the development of agriculture, including the wine sector. In the future, we intend to hold similar competition in Georgia.“
Giorgi Sigua, Head of National Tourism Administration of Georgia said: “I want to thank all wine companies for promoting our country as a wine tourism destination. We conducted a research on potential tourist attractions. The first four components are: Georgian supra, Georgian wine, Georgian hospitality and Georgian nature. Therefore, Georgian wine will be our business card world over. Our success in this field will attract a number of tourists.”
Rony Bacque, Head of Export Sales Division of Winery Khareba commented: “I have been here for three months. Our Saperavi Premium received a Great Gold, which is a great victory. I am acquainted with Mr. Havaux and he said that he wanted to come to Georgia and celebrate this victory with us.”
Georgian Journal had an opportunity to talk to Mr. Baudouin Havaux, President of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, who was the honorary guest of the reception: “It is a blind competition. The final commission of the jury consists of 6 different testers from all over the world. 50-60% of the testers are journalists, specializing in wine sector. I think that the journalists are more representative as final consumers than other people. The idea is to help the consumers buy wine. They may be accustomed to buying wines from France, Italy and other countries but if the journalists promote Georgian wines in the wake of this contest, they will buy them too, as it will be a guarantee of quality. We tried 8200 samples and only 24 of them received our prizes. The image of wine is very good for tourism. Therefore, victory of Georgian wines is a significant event for the country. I also tested wines here and I can say that you have very specific varieties of wine.”
Few facts from the history of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, also known as the “Wine World Championship”: It is one of the most prestigious competitions in wine sector globally. Established in 1994 by Louis Havaux, it has become a yearly tradition.
Giorgi Sigua, Head of the National Tourism Administration said that wine tours are very popular trends in the tourism worldwide. “We have agro-tourism, bio-tourism, wine tourism and other similar directions. We are not starting from zero but we are keen on developing this sector.” Most probably, the better days are ahead for Georgian wine, wine tourism and country’s economy as a whole.
