Parents of ISIS Militants who Threatened Georgia Speak Out
Yesterday, a video featuring members of the terrorist organization “Islamic State” appeared on the internet. Speaking in Georgian, the militants addressed Georgians and Muslims living in Georgia, threatening the former and urging the latter to support the “Islamic caliphate.” Two of them were Pankisi natives, while the other two hailed from Adjara region, which also has a significant Muslim minority.

Meri Iremadze is certain that one of the men seen in the video is her son Badri Iremadze, who left
Georgia at the end of August. According to her, before leaving, Badri told her that he was going to work on a tea plantation in Turkey to pay off his debts...

She also claims that her son sent her a letter in which he asks for her forgiveness. “In the letter, he asked me to forgive him for everything he might have said or done to hurt me. He also asked me to take care of his child if it’s born,” she says, adding that his son married two years ago and his wife became pregnant two months ago. According to Meri, her son told her that he went to Syria to “Help Muslims,” although she can’t say what he meant by that. Badri is 32 years old.

Another militant identified in the aforementioned video is Khvicha Gobadze. His father Ilia claims he hasn’t seen the video, but confirms that his son is an Islamic fundamentalist and is no longer in Georgia.

“My son went to work in Turkey together with his friends about two months ago. We contacted each other several times after that, but he never came back to see me. I do not know where he is now and I do not know about any videos. I don’t have an internet connection and thus haven’t seen anything of the sort. The only thing I can say for certain is that he’s not here,” says Mr. Gobadze, who is certain that Georgia should not be afraid of any threats made against it.

“How is a threat made by four people supposed to intimidate a country that borders Russia and has the U.S. standing by its side?” he asked during a TV interview.

According to Tamaz Antidze, the father of Mamuka Antidze, yet another man identified in the video, his son was on the Security Service’s watch list. Tamaz Antidze is certain that it was due to his association with Khvicha Gobadze and others. He admits that he personally helped his son cross the border, although thinking that Mamuka was going to find work in Turkey, not fight in Syria.

“Some time ago, I was contacted by Security Service who informed me of their whereabouts and showed me photos depicting my son and my nephew together with Khvicha Gobadze, who represented ISIS here, or so I was told. I couldn’t do anything except tell him that whatever he was doing was wrong, but he kept assuring us that everything was fine. Mamuka left Georgia on August 25. I was certain that he was leaving to find a job in Turkey, since he did so several times before. But on the second day he sent me a message saying that he was off to Syria,” says Mr. Antidze.

The bereaved father blames his son’s escape to Syria on his nephew Mirian, his associate Khvicha Gobadze and Jemal Artmeladze, the imam of Zoti village.                                                                              Robiko Paksadze

“My son is a victim of trafficking. They brainwashed him, breaking his contact with reality. Yes, he may have been a willfully acting adult, but his will was not his own,” the father insists.

Tamaz’s son, 23-year-old Mamuka, worked as an IT specialist in Batumi’s oncology hospital. After finishing school in a Gurian village of Nasakirali, he studied information technology in one of Batumi’s universities. He married two years ago. In the notorious video, he can be seen sitting to the far right.
