Poetry in Stone
There are some books that the world needs to have in print on the basis of permanent periodicity. There is such a book out in Georgia, and I am very proud of the fact. This is a book-album of a wide format, antitled as ‘Sculpture of Tbilisi – Poetry in Stone’, authored by a well-known Georgian writer and publicist Badri Kutateladze, the winner of the Georgian State Prize and Nico Nikoladze Prize, member of the Board of the National Union of
Georgian Writers and holder of Order of Honor. He currently heads the Didube Pantheon of Georgian Writers and Public Figures. It is unmistakably emphasized in the introduction to this great and absolutely indispensable book that the country which considers itself part of the civilized world has never before had such a publication at its disposal for the world to know better what Georgia and its capital city Tbilisi are all about when it comes to arts and architecture. Holding this book in hand, I am truly getting overwhelmed with the feeling that I have all of a sudden turned into a student who knows nothing about the town he was born into. First, I shuffled through it casually as it happens when you are presented with a book, then I started looking at photos more attentively, and finally, I wanted to learn it by heart so that I know where what stands in my beloved Tbilisi. After all, we all need that much knowledge about the place we are living and working in, at least for educating the guests of our country who usually happen to be more curious and even more knowledgeable in our history and arts than our own fellow citizens, who often boast their love for their country. Patriotism means to know what your nation represents and how far its influence over other nations can possibly go in the first place, in other words, how much and well could we impress those who are in touch and want to cooperate with us. This is exactly what the book by Badri Kutateladze is diligently serving to – it perseveredly teaches us the story of our city and helps us in making others love it. As I carry on reading into the introduction by famous Georgian sculptors, I start understanding better that the author clearly presents himself not only as researcher, curator and teacher of sculpture of Georgia, but also explains well the true artistic value of the monuments, illustrated in his wonderful book. Interestingly, the book carries photos of a number of sculptural works that have been dismantled and removed due to various historical and ideological circumstances, thus perpetuating their existence in our hearts and minds. This is Badri’s way of preserving the nation, so much venerated by him, the memory of who and what deserve to be remembered, at least because they are part of this valuable poetry in stone. ‘Sculpture of Tbilisi’ by Badri Kutateladze will definitely play its significant role in the history of arts of Georgia, and also the current everyday life of our compatriots and interested visitors of this country. This is a genuine guide and a priceless textbook of Sculpture of Tbilisi for all of us to use and value.
