Winter Wonder land

This winter here in Tbilisi, up to now has been somewhat uneventful. Unlike the type of frosty climate I was once accustomed to back home. Unfortunately, things in this part of the world are sometimes less extreme during the winter months.

As strange as it may seem to some, after a great summer the autumn leaves crunching under your feet have a way of reminding you that, Mother Nature has yet another wonderful trick up her sleeve. “Snow”, liquid fun in

crystal form, meter upon meter of endless possibilities. Of course, nearly everything has its down side. For example, I do not miss shoveling my car out of a massive snowdrift or being stuck behind the plow truck on the way to work. However, it is best to focus on the more positive aspects of a situation if you want to get the most out of it, “at least that’s how I see things” and for me, there are many pluses associated with the cold weather season. My new home does have some very impressive ski resorts I must say. Though I have not yet found the time to go and partake in their splendor, with the exception of a short day trip to Bakuriani, “my work is never done” but one day soon I am sure I will take time to make time and add one of them to my list of special places. For now, memories of ski trips from way back when will have to suffice. Accordingly, as a New Englander I have been afforded many such memories. One of my favorite would have to be my very first trip to “Loon Mountain” with my cousin Scott. Because I had never skied before, it turned out to be quite comical, to say the least. I spent most of the time flying through the air but not as a display of skill it was actually, a lack there of. Twisting and turning on one ski, with both arms stretch out as I struggled to stay upright, though most of the time I found myself toppling down the slope. Fortunately, by the end of the day I was able to navigate the trails well enough to pursue the sport further. Now, there is another very popular winter sport I am sure most have heard of, “snowmobiling”. Obviously, this is something that can be enjoyed wherever suitable conditions can be found. One of many such places here in Georgia, aside from the before mentioned resort “Bakuriani” is, “Gudauri”.  It is a great “winter wonder land” thus, it is safe to say that no matter what winter activity a person is looking for, it can easily be found there. It may seems as though I have an unhealthy obsession on my hands. Yet the truth is that when the snow flies in New Hampshire you can simply sit in the house and do nothing, or you can bundle up and enjoy yourself out doors. Moreover, if you choose to stay in and just enjoy a cup of hot chocolate next to the fire, this can also ease your winter blues. In the end it must be said that, I can remember many times when Mother Nature made such a dreadful mess that all you could do was sit and wait for the blizzard or ice storm to take its toll. This was “often without lights or heat” not to mention you probably won’t be able to dig your car out for a week. Ultimately, even though old man winter doesn’t always play fair. I still have many great memories to look back on and of course more to come…. “Hopefully in Bakuriani”
