Wrong Evaluation of Stalin

Wrong Evaluation of Stalin

Stalin was recognized as a tyrant and as an unheard of source of danger to the world. Professor Simon Maskharashvili has more.
GJ – What could the Stalinist evil have been serving in particular? Boosting the power of the soviet army?
SM – No way! After the mass execution of the Soviet top brass, the USSR lost war against the small country of Finland in 1940, and a little later in 1943 Hitler was giving

the hardest possible time to the country of the Soviets. Speaking about certain fields of economy, they could never make it until the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 because of the execution of best specialists in 1934 and 1937. Take agriculture for example, the tendency of its destruction is still around in the post-Soviet space. Stalin could not invade the world. Therefore, that huge sacrifice was made only for the sake of boosting his personal authority.
GJ – I can’t completely agree with you.  Although Stalin and his fellow-communists could not manage to give the ‘red color’ (communists were known as ‘Reds’) to the rest of the world, the USSR still remained the most influential country whose opinion used to be considered by the most powerful nations of the world.
SM – True! During Khrushchev’s rule the Soviet Union was the second strongest military power in the world. Stain had actually died without having enjoyed the same glory. But this was only the military and political strength. The world was scared and made considerate towards the Soviet Union only due to its military capability. The entire USSR was one big military camp.
GJ – This way or that way, the standard of living was permanently growing, wasn’t it?
SM – Everything is comparable. Any Georgian, or Russian or Ukrainian peasant was richer before the October (1917) revolution than during the entire Soviet period. Any Soviet person individually was much better fed and clad before the revolution than after. The conclusion from this leaves no doubt. It is said that Churchill had once praised Stalin, and as if his words about him were reflected in the British Encyclopedia. This is all not true. I checked it personally and it turned out to be a sheer fabrication of the Soviet propaganda machine – Churchill had never pronounced those words.
GJ – What words are you talking about?
SM – As if Churchill stated that Stalin had inherited the Russia of the wooden plow and had left after him the Russia equipped with nuclear capability. The fact that in 1953 people no longer used horses as means of transportation may not be credited to Stalin – the world has developed in general and standard of living was enhanced all over the world.
GJ – Then how to explain the fact that in the advanced West Stalin’s figure was recognized, he was loved and accepted as a person and a state figure. Was this part of propaganda too?
SM – This is an artificially boosted and propagated topic exactly as Simon Sebag-Motefiore wrote an absurd book titled ‘Young Stalin’, in which even the official terminology is not accurate. He had probably not even worked diligently in Soviet archives and invented those tales about Stalin which he had later reflected in his book.
GJ – Why do you think is right what you are trying to prove?
SM – Let’s for example take the topic of ‘Stalin and Women’. This theme is amply presented in Montefiore’s book. If there is any information at all out there, everything is in the secret presidential archives which had never been open to public since then. This is just a regular tabloid.
GJ – Let’s drop the discussion of Montefiore. I am asking why Stalin’s persona was recognized by the West.
SM – Stalin was recognized as a tyrant and as an unheard of source of danger to the world. I am not trying to belittle his merits. On the contrary, I am saying that he was the biggest evil that the world could possibly remember.
