Visa-free travel to EU countries: Must-know tips for Georgian citizens
The visa-free travel regime for Georgia with Europe will take on March 28. Citizens with biometric passports will be able to travel to the Schengen countries without visas for 90 days in the 180 day period.

The visa-free regime envisages free travel on the Schengen zone territory that includes 22 EU member countries, 4 non-member states and 4 Schengen candidate countries:

The EU member countries: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal,
Greece, France, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Finland, Sweden, and Czech Republic.

Non-member countries: Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Schengen candidates: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania and Croatia.

Great Britain and Ireland are exceptions. Visa free travel will not apply to them.

Visa-free regime gives Georgian citizens an opportunity to make only short-term visits, which is 90 days in any 180 day period.

Georgian citizens are obliged to adhere to:

The rules of entering and staying in the Schengen zone countries; local legislation; traffic rules; social order.

What happens if a Georgian citizen violates any of these rules?

If any citizen of Georgia violates the 90 day period, his/her stay will become illegal and the individual in question will be subject to readmission (return to Georgia). Additionally, his/her entering the Schengen zone countries will be restricted for up to 5 years. Besides, the violator may be fined for up to 3 000 euros and in case he/she fails to pay the fine, his/her entering the Schengen countries will be restricted.

In order to prove the aim of the visit, any individual has to present certain documents to the border officer:

Tourism and leisure

Return ticket
Hotel booking
Travel insurance
The document verifying the financial side of travel (cash, travel checks, electronic banking cards etc.). Usually, the amount of money needed is not more than 50 euros a day, in addition with hotel booking.

Participation in conferences, seminars and business meetings

Invitation from the relevant event/conference, seminar
Hotel booking
Travel insurance
Return ticket
The document verifying the financial side of travel (cash, travel checks, electronic banking cards etc.). Usually, the amount of money needed is not more than 50 euros a day, in addition with hotel booking.

Visiting relatives or friends

Contact details of a person you’re visiting (address, phone number, etc)
Residence permit or legality of stay in the relevant country of a person you’re visiting.
Travel insurance
Return ticket
The document verifying the financial side of travel (cash, travel checks, electronic banking cards etc.).

Medical treatment

Consent from a medical institution, to travel to a EU country for treatment.
Travel medical insurance for the entire period;
The document verifying the financial side of travel and treatment (cash, travel checks, electronic banking cards etc.).

Georgia-EU talks on visa liberalization started on June 4, 2012 and on February 25, 2013, the Government of Georgia was handed the visa liberalization action plan. The plan included requirements that the Georgian side should have carried out for the imposition of a visa-free regime be carried out.

In December 2015 the European Commission gave a positive assessment of the commitments undertaken within the frames of the Action Plan and published the positive recommendation. In February 2017, the issue of visa liberalization was voted in favor of Georgia at the European Parliament’s plenary session.
