Lockets with Georgian soil by Ukrainian blogger: Carrying a part of your homeland with you
Daria Kholodilina, an Ukrainian blogger calls Georgia her second homeland. She has been living in Georgia since 2013 and has already accumulated substantial knowledge about the country, its culture, sights and the people. Her stories about Georgia, which she writes on her blog called Dariko and include the necessary tips for a journey throughout the capital and the regions of our country, are pretty popular.

This time she came out with an initiative that can hardly leave anyone indifferent. Daria
has traveled around Georgia for a year and picked the soil from different regions, from Kakheti and Kartli to Abkhazia and Ajara. Now she started production of souvenirs, rings and lockets with Georgian soil inside in them. The aim is to raise money for IDP children. She shared her story with Georgian Journal.

“Once, as I was abroad, I was missing Georgia a lot, and the movie "Pesvebi" (The Roots) popped up in my mind. The episode, when a Georgian emigrant tells the other that he is always walking on the Georgian soil, although he is abroad - as Georgian soil was literally in his soles. So I came to the idea about producing such shoes first…”

However, after giving a deeper thought, she considered it to be unrealistic, as it would be too expensive, plus unprofessional, because she didn’t have experience in such kind of production.

“Then I thought about something smaller, like lockets. Something you could always carry with you, something nice and able to carry a part of your homeland in.

While elaborating the idea, I also caught myself on the feeling of missing Georgia constantly. I usually start missing it already in the airport, as I fly to a business trip or holiday, and sometimes it makes me sad, because my feelings towards the motherland (Ukraine) are locked deep inside. I asked myself why, and then confessed that it's all because my home region, Donetsk, is now occupied, and every thought about my family there and about people who die because of war are very traumatic, so I just suppressed them. I didn't move to Georgia because of the war; I did it before, and it was my sincere wish to spend my life in this country, but I can understand how painful the loss of land can be. And that's why I decided to dedicate the accessories and souvenirs I produce to the IDP children, to those who were forced out of the region where they were born.”

The price of the items is symbolic: one ring or locket is 20 lari, one bottle - 10 lari. Daria says, she wants to buy books for the children, not toys or sweets, because it's an investment in their future.

“Besides, there is another reason to make this project charitable: the Georgian soil doesn't belong to me, so I don't have a right to earn money by selling even those little pieces that are inside of rings, lockets and bottles.”

She hopes that Georgians who live abroad, or just friends of our country will be interested in the project, which she named “Pesvebi” after the legendary Georgian movie where the idea came from. Her Spanish friends, who help the street dogs of Georgia, as well as a couple of Georgian emigrants have already purchased a couple of items.

“The accessories are not fancy, but in my opinion, the value is in something else, ” Daria says.
