Georgian Journal contacted Giorgi Mchedlishvili who elaborated on his big success:

“It is such an honor to me and my team members that our work has been recognized by NASA. Our team from Columbia Space Initiative won NASA Aeronautics Challenge. Columbia University participated in this challenge organized by NASA for the first time.

In contrast to other leading universities, where students undergo special courses for participating in Low Noise Subsonic Challenge, our main source to creativity was pure enthusiasm.

We designed a future aircraft that will consume less fuel, produce less harmful emissions and make less noise.

Meeting all the components and requirements was necessary in order the work to be reviewed by NASA. Gryphon is a hybrid aircraft and we think aviation should be developed in this direction exactly.

Ecological and environmental situation on our planet is getting worse every year and implementing ecologically clean transport in this century is vital for our wellbeing and future.

Our team consists of 12
people and is divided in three groups: engine, aerodynamics and aerodesign. The technical work regarding the project was carried out in 9 months.

This competition was one of the most important challenges of this year posed by NASA. Both Bachelor and Master student teams of the US leading universities took part in the competition.

Our model Gryphon that came in the first place will be implemented between 2025 and 2035.

As it turned out, this was the final challenge announced by NASA and it will not be held in future.

I would like to thank my friends for their commitment and belief that we could make a difference in the future aeronautics industry.

I can hardly wait to present our model at Nasa Langley on September 26th” – Giorgi Mchedlishvili noted in the interview with Georgian Journal.
