Tbilisi State University marks 100th anniversary under the patronage of UNESCO
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, (often shortened to its historical name, Tbilisi State University or TSU), one of the oldest universities in Georgia and the Caucasus region, celebrates its 100th anniversary today. The university carries the name of prominent Georgian historian and of the founding fathers of the Tbilisi State University Ivane Javakhishvili.

TSU was established exactly one century ago, on February 8, 1918, and since then remains as the main hub of
education and culture throughout whole country. In Georgia, graduating from TSU is a great honor for the representatives of each generation.

It is noteworthy that 100th anniversary of Tbilisi State University is celebrated under the patronage of UNESCO.

The relevant decision was made at the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris upon proposal by member states. Since 1956, UNESCO participates in the commemorations of historic events and in the anniversaries of eminent personalities celebrated by Member States in order to give them worldwide significance.
This decision confirms the regional importance of the event and underlines the role played by the Tbilisi State University for the popularization and development of culture, education and science in Georgia and elsewhere.

The events marking TSU’s anniversary begun in December 2017, due to the fact that TSU statute was approved in December 1917, and last throughout the next year.

National Bank of Georgia issued a collector coin to mark the 100th anniversary of TSU

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) issued a collector coin in denomination of 5 Lari to mark the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU).

The front side features Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University building as well as a portrait of Ivane Javakhishvili (Georgian historian and one of the founding fathers of the Tbilisi State University) in improved relief quality and volume. President of the National Bank of Georgia, Koba Gvenetadze, rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze and coin designer, Nino Gongadze presented the anniversary coin to the audience.

The coin has been minted by the Royal Mint of Spain in amount of 1500 pieces

Coin design was selected through an open competition and its author is Nino Gongadze.The coin has been minted by the Royal Mint of Spain in amount of 1500 pieces. The sale price is GEL 95 and the coins are available since February 1, 2018 at the Cash Center of NBG, Money Museum in Kvareli and online store.

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University is the only university not only in Georgia, but throughout the Caucasus region, which has been ranked among the top 2 percent of universities in the world, according to U.S. News & World Report.

State University marks its 100th anniversary as the major educational and research institution in the country, which annually implements about 200 local and international scientific grant projects with about 22 thousand Georgian and about 600 foreign students undergoing their studies there.

Founder of the Tbilisi State University Ivane Javakhishvili

Tbilisi State University was founded in 1918 owing to the leadership of Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili and the group of his followers. It was the first and the only educational body of this type in Caucasus Region by that time. Several scientists - Giorgi Akhvlediani, Shalva Nutsubidze, Dimitri Uznadze, Grigol Tsereteli, Akaki Shanidze, Andrea Razmadze, Korneli Kekelidze, Ioseb Kipshidze, Petre Melikishvili and Ekvtime Takaishvili were also co-founders. Professor Petre Melikishvili, a Georgian chemist, was chosen as the first principal of TSU.

TSU has six faculties: Law, Economics and Business, Humanities, Medicine, Social and Political Sciences, Exact and Natural Sciences and the International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University as an autonomous graduate school of economics.
