Despite the name of the movement, Bach in the Subways, you do not have to perform in subway

The first and principal organizer of Bach in the Subways – Tbilisi is Ana Vashakmadze, a senior student at Tbilisi Central Music School. Ana wanted more young people to get interested and involved in classical music. When she first learned about Bach in the Subways online in early 2015, she felt this was a good way to make that happen. That March she engaged her fellow students in Tbilisi’s first Bach in the Subways – an enormous success which earned strong support from the Tbilisi Central Music School community.

Despite the name of the movement, Bach in the Subways, you do not have to perform in subway to be a part of the celebration. The performance is open and accessible to all – a musical gift for anyone who wants to hear it.

Although Bach in the Subways originated in the subways of New York City, some cities do not have subways, and others maintain such strict rules that playing music there is impossible. The most important idea behind Bach in the Subways has always been to bring Bach’s music to life, and spread classical music to the wider public, especially those who would not normally hear it. Musicians who cannot access subways can perform wherever there are souls to hear the music – in malls, on the street, in churches, schools, coffee shops, airports, and more.

Dale Henderson

Bach in the Subways was originally conceived and executed as a solo project by cellist Dale Henderson beginning in early 2010, when he began a campaign of frequent performances of the Bach Cello Suites in the New York City Subway.

On March 10, 2011, Henderson posted the following message on the Bach in the Subways Facebook page:

“Musicians: pick any subway station & any time between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 21, play Bach, and when people try to give you money don't take it. Just tell them it's Bach's birthday, and to enjoy the music. This is Bach in the Subways Day!”
