Georgia celebrates International Women’s Day
March is considered women's month and March 8 celebrates International Women’s Day. Georgia like other countries marks International Women’s Day annually on March 8. In Georgia it is regarded as a holiday, yet many women still work on this day. It celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It was honoured for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March, where more than one million men and women attended rallies campaigning for women's rights to work,
vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. The United Nations has its own official theme each year.
On this day, as a rule, Georgian men try to make women feel special by giving them gifts and flowers, or inviting their beloved ones to the romantic dinner.

Yet, despite the romantic and caring gestures toward women, many women in Georgia still face inequality or abuse. According to the new survey on violence against women, one from every seven woman has experienced domestic violence. 9 percent of women in Georgia has undergone sexual harassment in their childhood, one out of five women say she has experienced sexual oppression.

In relation to this day many events are organized to mark this day, be it street marches by feminists or other types of activities.

Many countries like Cuba, China, Laos, Madagascar, Russia, Uganda, Moldova, Zambia, Nepal, Afghanistan, Burkina, Armenia, Mongolia, Georgia, Vietnam, Eritrea, Kazakhsthan and Ukraine observe official holiday on March 8.
