Experts of Doppelmayr to inspect all ski-lifts at Georgia’s four resorts

At the invitation of Georgia’s Ministry of Economy, the expert-instructors of the world’s leading manufacturer Doppelmayr will once again arrive in Georgia to inspect all the ski lifts installed by them at Georgia’s four resorts.

Leading Austrian ski-lift producer Doppelmayr Garaventa Group will check all cableways in Georgia’s ski resorts following the March 16 accident in Georgia’s most popular ski resort Gudauri, which left 11 people with mild injuries.

In particular, the expert-instructors of Doppelmayr will inspect all the ski
lifts at Hatsvali, Goderdzi, Bakuriani and Gudauri.

The information was released after the meeting of Georgia’s First Vice-Premier and the Minister of Economy, Dimitry Kumsishvili, and Valery Yashin, representative of Doppelmayr.

At the meeting Kumsishvili and Yashin agreed that all workers employed at the ski-lifts will undergo additional trainings in Georgia. In the process of training, which implies appropriate actions in emergency situations, a special simulator will be used, which will be brought to Georgia by Doppelmayr.

It was also noted that, along with the re-training of the staff, new staff should also be prepared. All persons who undergo training will be certified . The representatives of the Georgian government will also be involved in the process.

Moreover, the sides also agreed that according to the international practice, the experience of world-famous companies will be shared with Georgian companies for revealing which kind of inspection should be conducted at the ski lifts in accordance with new standards. As the representatives of Doppelmayr explained, this is the world practice and sharing this huge experience with Georgian side will be quite important for implementing higher safety standards. The process envisages carrying out of regular inspections of the ropeways.

It is also noteworthy that at the invitation of the Georgian side, in April, the representatives of the company Leitner will also arrive to check the ropes installed in Bakuriani and Mestia. They will also re-train their staff working at the local ski lifts.

According to the initiation of Georgian side, the experts of the company Poma will also come and check the ropeways installed by them in Gudauri and Mestia.
As a reminder, 11 people were injured in a ropeway crash in Gudauri resort on March 16. One of them was pregnant citizen of Sweden, 6 citizens of Russia and 4 citizens of Ukraine.

The Georgian government has invited all affected tourists to Gudauri next year for free.

International experts from the French international company Bureau Veritas and of the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrived in Georgia’s winter resort of Gudauri to investigate the ski-lift accident.

Experts from the Austrian Doppelmayr Garaventa group, which installed the ski-lift in 2007, were involved in examination to find out the cause of the malfunction of a ski lift.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation into the case of Gudauri under the Article 275 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which implies violation of the safety or operation of the railway, water, air or cable traffic movement.

International experts from the French international company Bureau Veritas

Due to the ropeway incident in Gudauri, Deputy Director of Mountain Resorts Development Company and Head of Gudauri Mountain Management Department have resigned.

First Vice-prime Minister, Minister of Economics and Sustainable Development Dimitri Kumsishvili said at a briefing on March 23 that the ropeway operator has also left the position.

At the briefing the first Vice-Premier revealed a preliminary conclusion of the company "Bureau Veritas" regarding the incident. He said that on March 16, the Gudarui incident occurred because of human error after voltage drop there.
