Mourning day declared in Georgia -Country grieves people killed in Tkibuli mine
According to the government's decision, 6 April 2018 was declared a mourning day in Georgia in relation to the death of miners in Tkibuli’s Mindeli mine.

As informed by the governmental administration, today, on April 6, flags will be flying at half mast at all administrative buildings in honor of the memory of six people killed in the Mindeli mine yesterday.

Public Defender's Office will observe investigation over Tkibuli
accident.

The Public Defender expresses deep sorrow over the Tkibuli accident and offers sympathy to the family members of the victims. A representative of the Public Defender has visited two injured miners at the Kutaisi Regional Clinical Hospital.

Health condition of people injured in mine is satisfactory

According to the statement released by the Public Defender’s Office, the Public Defender analyzed the statistical data on the investigations of similar cases and information about the court rulings in the parliamentary report 2017.

“The statistical data of the Ministry show that in 2017, only 11 out of 128 cases of investigation into accidents went to the court; investigations were terminated in 36 cases and were pending in 81 cases.

Imprisonment was used only in 3 out of 90 cases. Guilty verdicts were delivered in 20 more cases as a result of the consideration of the cases on the merits. 72,2% of cases were settled by plea bargain. The amount of fines imposed varies from GEL 500 to 5000. The data also show problems in terms of delayed investigations and actual results of the investigations”, says the statement.

Uncle of one of the miners deceased in Tkibuli mine holds the clothes of his nephew

In total 6 people fell victim to the accident that occurred in the Tkibuli mine, in Imereti region of Western Georgia. According to the Metallurgical, Mining and Chemical Industry Trade Union, the accident occurred at the Mindeli mine at 04:00 am.

As the head of Saknakhshiri GIG Group company Jumber Jakeli said, the accident was caused by an earthquake and rock burst. In the aftermath of the violent fracture of rock that can occur in deep mines tremendous pressure erupted injuring several people and claiming lives of six workers.

The victims who perished as a result of the tragic accident are: 26-year-old Pavle Gamzardashvili, 28-year-old Giorgi Bochorishvili, 46-year-old Mirza Kurtsikidze, 50-year-old Besik Gurgenidze, 52-year-old Elguja Bochorishvili and 59-year-old Gogi Rapava.

Health condition of people injured in mine is satisfactory. The First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitri Kumsishvili, visited the injured miners at Tkibuli and Kutaisi hospitals, in Georgia’s Imereti Region.

According to head of the coal company, the tragic accident that happened in Tkibuli mine was not caused by the violation of workplace safety standards.

“The violation of labor safety standards should be excluded. As a rule, it is impossible to prevent earthquake and rock burst that previously was also observed in Georgia in 1986. This was the second time that such natural disaster occurred. Small scale rock burst happens quite often, yet such large scale eruption is quite rare”, Head of Saknakhshiri, company owning Tkibuli mine elaborated.
