Places in Georgia where smoking will be banned from May 1, 2018

On May 1, 2018 new regulations on smoking tobacco will come into force in Georgia in order to free the public spaces from smoke and to prohibit promotion of smoking.The new law bans smoking in public places, including hotels, café-bars and restaurants.

In particular, due to the changes adopted by the Parliament of Georgia, smoking will be forbidden in the following places:

In any building, as well as in public transport, except for the taxi and electric boat.

Smoking will
not be allowed in foster-care and educational institutions, libraries, students’ camps, children's entertainment centers and other places intended for the people under age 18, also at public meetings intended for the persons under age 18.

Smoking is also banned in the buildings of medical and pharmaceutical facilities and on the territories that belong to them; throughout the whole area of petrol, gas, and gas distribution stations; in buildings and facilities where inflammable substances are kept; smoking is also not allowed at some of the stadiums which has the administration.

Smoking is allowed at individual's place of residence, if the person actually lives there and the area is not intended for carrying out an entrepreneurial activity.

Also smoking is not banned in specialized laboratory intended for studying cigarette smoke; at penitentialfacility , where smoking conditions are determined by relevant minister; at preliminary detention isolator.

Smoking is allowed at individual's place of residence

Smoking will also be allowed at cigar-bars, arranged in accordance with the relevant permit issued under the law; casinos; in specially arranged smoking room at the transit area of the airport.

Smoking will be allowed at the institutions intended for psychiatric and palliative care according to the regulations determined by the head of the relevant institution.
A new national tobacco control law was adopted by The Parliament of Georgia on May 17, 2017. It was signed by the President of Georgia on May 30, 2017.

As adopted and with its full implementation, this law will be one of the strongest tobacco control laws in the WHO (World Health Organization) European Region and beyond. The legislation may be considered a “next generation tobacco control law”, as in addition to all the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) time-bound measures, it also contains plain packaging rules.

According to the data published by National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, 11,000 people die in Georgia every year due to smoking tobacco and 6 million people in total around the globe.

According to the UN office in Georgia, if Georgia implements the proposed package of amendments, it could save about GEL 27 million per year.
