Caucasus Nature Fund allocates 1 100 000 EUR to Georgian Protected Areas
8 protected Areas of Georgia will receive the grant in amount of 1, 100 000 EUR from the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF). The grant will be allocated within the frameworks of the trilateral grant agreement signed at the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.

As informed by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Giorgi Khanishvili, Acting Chairperson of the Agency of Protected Areas Valerian Mchedlidze and Executive Director of Caucasus Nature Fund George Giacomini
signed the agreement.

Within the framework of the Grant Agreement, trainings are planned to advance the qualifications of the staff of the protected areas.

Executive Director of Caucasus Nature Fund George Giacomini emphasized the importance of financial support for the people who care about nature conservation.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Gela Khanishvili stressed the importance of the cooperation with international donor organizations and the support from their side in various directions.

Georgia is home to several protected areas

Georgia is home to several protected areas, which receive protection because of their environmental, cultural or similar value.

There are 14 Strict Nature Reserves, 11 National Parks, 18 Managed Nature Reserves, 40 Natural Monuments and 2 Protected Landscapes in Georgia. The national parks cover 276,724 ha.

There are 14 Strict nature Reserves in Georgia with a total area of 140.672 thousand ha, which amounts to approximately 7% of the country’s territory. The first Strict Nature Reserve was established in 1912 in Lagodekhi district.

It is allowed to enter the protected area of such category only for educational purpose and for conducting non-manipulative scientific research.

Strict Nature Reserves are established in order to maintain nature, natural processes and genetic resources in a dynamic and pristine condition, and to conduct scientific research and studies, with a minor impact, for educational and environmental monitoring purposes.

Strict Nature Reserves in Georgia are as follwos: Kintrishi, Liakhvi, Sataplia, Mariamjvari, Tusheti, Batsara, Babaneuri, Lagodekhi, Vashlovani, Borjomi, Kobuleti, Bichvinta-Miuseri, Ritsa and Pskhu-Gumisti strict nature reserves.

Machakhela National Park

National parks of Georgia are additional jewels of the country’s breathtaking nature and they represent an ideal places to visit throughout the year, especially in hot summer days. There are 11 national parks on Georgia’s territory: Borjomi-Kharagauli, Algeti, Javakheti, Kazbegi, Kolkheti, Machakhela, Mtirala (which is considered the wettest area in the country), Tbilisi, Tusheti, Vashlovani and Pshav-Khevsureti national parks.
