Ministry of Healthcare will get involved in discussion and meeting over drug policy issues

The Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia will be involved in the meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs over the drug policy issues, - Deputy Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs Zaza Bokhua told reporters on May 17.

"We will talk about this; we will be involved and have been involved. We will discuss and settle on certain issues within
the competence of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs,” – Bokhua said.

The White Noise Movement demanded the involvement of the Minister of Health in the meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and said that this meeting would determine whether they continue participating in the negotiations or go back to the street.

As for the issue regarding drug policy, we demand the involvement of the Minister of Health in the meeting, because we think that drug consumption is the prerogative of this agency. They expressed readiness for the meeting, but we do not yet know the date. The deadline is Saturday. It will be decided at this meeting whether we will continue participating in the negotiations or go back to the street”, reads the statement.

On May 14, Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia met with the members of White Noise Movement, public defender Nino Lomjaria and the representatives of NGO-S to review the details of special operation conducted in Georgia’s popular night clubs Bassiani and Café Gallery on May 12 as well as to launch works on a new drug policy.

As Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia reports, the new bill on drug policy will be adopted until the end of June. According to him, there is a difference of opinions about drug policy in the ruling team, but there is a resource for achieving an agreement.

The first protest expressed through massive rave to electronic music in Tbilisi

As a reminder, on May 12, at night two clubs of Tbilisi were raided by police under the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. As a result, eight people were arrested for allegedly selling drugs as well as dozens of other people present at the night clubs,that were later released.

Special operations carried out at clubs caused outrage among clubbers as well as other citizens who held protest rally in front of the Parliament Building in Tbilisi, on Rustaveli Avenue. Originally the participants of the rally condemned what happened at the clubs, demanded resignation of PM and the Minister of Internal Affairs as well as revision of current drug policy. Eventually the sides settled on working on a new drug policy. Meanwhile Pre-trial detention was ordered for eight persons detained for drug trade.
