People gathered in Tbilisi to condemn homophobia and defend sexual minority rights

Although the queer community and their supporters announced that they would not hold demonstration marking the International Day Against Homophobia on May 17, because of the threats coming from controversial and far-right groups, still a number of people, representatives of NGOs and some of the diplomats gathered to condemn homophobia and protect the rights of minorities.

The peaceful demonstration against transphobia and homophobia took place outside the building of the Government's Administration.

Representatives of law enforcement bodies were mobilized on the territory. Representatives of the Patrol Police, Security Police, Criminal Police and Special Tasks Department were on the spot to prevent escalation of the situation.

As reported, the riot policemen were mobilized in the vicinities of the territory. Streets connected to the Government's Administration were closed so that counter groups could not intervene and cause disorder.

Police were controlling the situation and those, who violated the law, were detained,- Deputy Interior Minister Nino Javakhadze told reporters when commenting about the demonstration against transphobia and homophobia that was underway outside the government's building.

The Deputy Minister studied the recent situation outside the government's building and stated that law enforcers were providing the safety of the demonstrators. According to her, all, who try to express their position peacefully, have the opportunity to do so.

"The situation is controlled by the police. Those who have violated or are violating the law, are detained and taken to the [police] department. Hence, those, who are trying to express their opinion peacefully, are allowed to do so," Nino Javakhadze said.
