The International Republican Institute published annual survey conducted in Georgia
Data was collected throughout Georgia (excluding the occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia) between April 10-22, 2018, through face-to-face interviews at respondents’ homes. The sample consisted of 1,500 permanent residents of Georgia older than the age of 18 and eligible to vote. The margin of error does not exceed plus or minus 2.5 percent for the full sample. Data are weighted by the variables of gender, age, region and size of the settlement using the latest data from Geostat.
Response rate was 71 percent.

There is general trend that all of the National Institutions in Georgia lose their favorability. According to the survey, national institutions lose favorability. Georgian Orthodox Church has lost support with 4% compared to last year and 84% of participants say that they are favorable with it. The number of people, who supports Georgian army, Georgian Media, police and local authorities, has also declined. Office of the PM, Cabinet of Ministers, Parliament, Office of the Ombudsman are less favorable this year compared to data of last year.

Opinions about other institutions in Georgia

There is a slight shift between those who are favorable of keeping up relations with Russia. Compared to previous years their number has declined with 3% and consists of 50% of respondents. The number of pro-European part of population has risen and is on the mark of 27%.

Opinions about foreign policy of Georgia

50% of Georgian population backs joining the NATO alliance. Compared to previous years, this is a significant decline of supporters. In 2008 70% and in 2012 65% of respondents supported the idea of becoming a member of the alliance. Since 2012 their number has been reducing. 57% of surveyed do not know when Georgia will join the organization and 18% think, that it will happen only after 2021.

How opinions about NATO membership change from 2008 to 2018

The number of those who support Georgia joining the EU has also declined. In 2013 67% was supporting the idea, while in 2018 only 60% sympathizes becoming a member of the organization.

46% backs further dialogue with Russia compared to 2010, when 84% supported relations with Russia.

22% of surveyed consider that things in Georgia go to right direction, while 67% have an opposite position, 11% has no answer.

Based on the survey, among the major problems Georgia currently faces, unemployment and economy occupy first two places respectively. These two issues represent main problems for households and both for inhabitants of towns and villages.

The survey says that the three main accomplishments of the government is current healthcare system, signing a Visa-free regime agreement with the EU and advancement in freedom of speech and expression. Yet, according to the reports, their biggest failure is unfulfilled promises.

90% of respondents consider that Georgia has good relations with the EU. 88% have the same position towards the US compared to Russia, where 89% thinks that the country has bad relations with the latter one.

The majority of surveyed support ruling Georgian Dream party – 27%.

For information about current international situation vast majority of respondents use Georgian TV channels – 90%. They are also considered as the most trusted informational sources by 77%.

The number of those who use the internet on a daily bases increases gradually and amounts to 45% of respondents.

Facebook is the most frequently used social network by 86% of surveyed people.

54% of Georgians are female and 46% are male. The majority of population is more than 50 years old. 91% of population is ethnic Georgian. Unemployment rate is 27%.

Overall, 57% of population lives in towns (30% in Tbilisi and 27% in other towns), 43% live in rural areas.
