Georgian priest detained near occupation line released

Georgian Priest Ioane Okhanashvili, leader of the Dirby church, detained by the Russian military guards has been released. The report was confirmed by the State Security Service of Georgia.

Another person, detained together with the clergyman, remains in custody.

The clergy and the resident of the village Khurvaleti Border guards were detained in different places. First the information about the detention of the local of Khurvaleti village was spread, and then the detention of priest Ioane of Dirby Church became known.

The latest statistics about Georgian citizens being kidnapped (arrested) by so-called border guards near Tskhinvali (so-called South Ossetia) are quite alarming.

Between January 1 and May 11, 2018, in total 19 citizens of Georgia were arrested in the occupied Tskhinvali Region and 16 - in the occupied region of Abkhazia for allegedly crossing of the so-called border.

According to the information provided by the Georgian State Security Service, in 2017, there were 52 cases of detention for so called “illegal crossing” of the border in the direction of Abkhazia (Georgia's north-west breakaway region)  and 126 - in the direction of Tskhinvali.
