Explosion at Mindeli mine kills 4 and injures 6

This morning there was an explosion at the Mindeli mine, Tkibuli, in the Imereti region of Western Georgia, which left 4 people dead and 6 injured. 3 of the 6 injured suffered severe burns and have been transferred to Tbilisi hospitals for specialist treatment.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, methane gas allegedly caused the explosion resulting in the collapse of the mine tunnel’s ceiling.

All the injured have been taken to hospital.

Investigation has begun into the accident which may have been caused by a breach in health and safety rules.

According to the PM of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze, Anyone who is responsible will be prosecuted. He added that the mine will remain closed pending the conclusion of the investigation and international engineering-technical experts have provided their report.

Other politicians have also expressed their condolences and made statements about the tragedy.

Parliamentary majority leader Archil Talakvadze said that Mindeli mine should be closed until they reach modern safety standards. Parliamentary vice speaker Gia Volski has also reacted to the news, saying that this kind of tragedy is a problem for the whole country and that employers should provide a safe working environment for their employees.
Several tragedies have already happened at the Mindeli mine

Deputy Ministers of Economics and Sustainable Development Giorgi Cherkezishvili and Genadi Arveladze travelled to Tkibuli.

A Special supervising group of the Ministry of Economics and Sustainable Development was also sent to the site.

It is not the first time that a tragedy happens at Mindeli mine. On April 5 6 people fell victim to the accident that has occurred in the Tkibuli mine. According to the official information, the reason of tragedy then was a collapse of a ceiling.
