Caught In The social Web
10 February, 2011

Throughout all of history, man has depended on some form of communication to survive and advance. Of course, once electricity came into the picture that’s when we started to reaching further and faster. Telegraph, telegram, “tell a woman” ok, the last one just slipped out, but the other two are shining examples of human beings reaching out across the world, sending and seeking knowledge. Of course, in comparison to the way we are able to connect in today’s dynamic digital world,

tapping out a “tweet” or sms via Morse code just wouldn’t cut it. Yet, without these simple invention we would have had nothing to build on, and build we did. Benjamin Franklin, along with many others got the ball rolling with inventions that would one day be the building blocks for something beyond their imagination. Now that I have something to build on, it will come as no surprise for me to say that “face book”, “twitter” and all the other “social networks” didn’t appeal to me at first. Like so many people, it seemed like a waste of time to me. Parked in front of a computer screen all day playing Farmville, no! But little did I know how much more there was to be discovered. The most important for me being, long distance communication. For someone living abroad, networks such as “skype” truly are a modern miracle. In addition to uniting the masses, the web has transformed everything from entertainment to advertising. Take “youtube” for example, it puts absolutely anything and everything right at your fingertips. Moreover, it seamlessly unites so many other sites, artist and entertainers, all of which   constantly collaborate and communicate boundlessly in cyberspace. If you consider the fact that  the internet is 40 years old and going strong, it become easy to see how it has found a way into nearly every nook and cranny of so many lives. Consequently this week’s story has got me wondering about how many readers are on “facebook” and “twitter” or some other site. Oddly enough, I caved in and jumped on the “twitter” band wagon this week. It seemed like a good idea and maybe even a good story. Because I’m new at “tweeting” there is a slight shortage of fresh info on this particular topic, but I can say it was “supper colossal” to have my first follower turn out to be  “Joe Satriani” one of my favorite guitar legends. Even though I’m only one of his 44,886 somewhat unknown followers, I thought it was cool to be one of the 31,279 he chose to follow.  Still, that’s 13,607 he chose not to follow, looks like I need to step up my game in case he somehow finds my stories on the web. All joking aside, if you have a favorite celebrity or anything else for that matter, then sign up and have a good time. You can also find me there by searching for johnnyenglish43 and tweet about my stories or even suggest a topic for me to write about, if I use your idea, I’ll mention you in the story. Well my dear readers, it is time for me to sign out, I hope to see you all in cyberspace…
