Georgia should be at the top of every travel destination list – says German photographer about Georgia
22 August, 2018
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Georgia tomorrow and possibly as a result of this visit the German media is currently writing a lot about Georgia. Spiegel recently published an article – “Georgia – the South Caucasus country becomes more and more popular with tourists”. Author of the article, Ines Hielscher spoke with photographer Andreas Oetker-Kast, who has been living in Georgia for several months now and who has prepared a photo album about Georgia and
Georgian life.

Andreas first visited Georgia in 2011. He was invited to participate in an international exhibition and knew very little about the country. “The media only used to write about the conflicts in Georgia. But when I had arrived in Tbilisi, I found myself fascinated with their hospitality, centuries-old history, traditions and beautiful nature” – says Andreas. He started to take photos right after his arrival and contacted local colleagues as well.

Andreas relates that the Georgians met him with utter hospitality. “I have never felt more kindness than I have felt from Georgians. They used to invite me to their homes and when I would agree, their joy was endless” – he says. Andreas met many Georgians and understood a lot about the country, but he admits, that the Georgians speak a lot about politics and thinks that this is the result of the unstable political situation in the country and the result of ongoing conflicts. “But politically, the country is on the track of democracy” – he says.

Andreas says, that the Georgians perceive Russia and first of all, President Vladimir Putin as a threat to their country. “No one knows how long the current fragile peace will last, because there still remain unresolved conflicts”.

The place Andreas likes the most is Tbilisi, despite lots of cars and air pollution. “I like Tbilisi very much. There is a strong essence of people’s energy. Tbilisi is truly a European city. There are museums and cafes, restaurants in every corner, free Wi-Fi. As for the outside of Tbilisi, the David Gareja monastery impressed me very much. There was a very special atmosphere” – he says.

“Even though Georgia is a small country, almost every type of climate is presented here. There is the Caucasus – Mountain permanently covered with snow, there is the subtropical Black Sea and between them there are fertile lands. In the Eastern part of Georgia one can see a desert as well. One important topic is Georgian wine – Georgia is considered to be the cradle of wine” – says Andreas and advices a visit to Kakheti to fully experience the magical flavor of Georgian wine.

“There are so many interesting things in Georgia that it is a country that should be at the top of every travel destination list ”.
