25 years after the fall of Sukhumi
25 years ago Sukhumi, the capital city of Abkhazia fell – thousands of Georgians were forced to flee the city. On the 27th of September, thousands of people became internally displaced. Tens of thousands of people died in the war. Today Georgia commemorates those who were the victims of the conflict in Abkhazia. National flags are lowered at buildings of state institutions across Georgia.

On the 14th of August 1992, a military confrontation started in Abkhazia. In September 1993, the Abkhazian
armed group (separatist forces) created by the Head of Abkhazia’s High Council Vladislav Ardzinba, violated the ceasefire agreement and opened fire on the National Guards of Georgia. The guards entered Abkhazia in order to protect Sochi-Inguri part of Georgian railways.

The State Council of Georgia decided to send the National Guards to Abkhazia. The Abkhazian armed group confronted Georgia’s national Guards and war followed. Military action lasted for 13 months and 13 days and ended with the fall of Sokhumi on September 27, 1993.

Throughout the war, Abkhaz forces were supported and represented by Russian air forces and soldiers. After the fall of Sukhumi, thousands of people fled the city by sea, while the majority fled onfoot through the Kodori gorge in the mountains, where many died of cold and hunger.

Giorgi Jakhaia, a blogger, writes about the fall of Sukhumi. He remembers that when the population was fleeing Sukhumi by a ship, the whole city was burning right before their eyes. No one knew if anyone from the council survived or not. Later, the information about Zhiuli Shartava was revealed. He was tortured to death. Sukhumi looked like a slaughter city. Abkhazian, Chechens, Armenians and Russians killed and tortured civilian population with no regard for age as this included children.
