Levan Bokeria – First Georgian to hold a Bill Gates Scholarship
Levan Bokeria won the Bill Gates Scholarship. He is going to carry out a doctoral research in Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. The first Gates Cambridge Scholar from Georgia will do his PhD in Biological Science at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. He will try to gain more knowledge about the human brain, the process of cre
ating lasting memories and the causes of neurodegenerative diseases.

After graduating from the secondary school, Levan Bokeria embarked on studying Sociology as a major and Economics as a minor at the George Mason University in Virginia, the USA. Then he moved to New York and started studying Bioethics and Philosophy the University of Rochester. At last, he chose Philosophy and Brain and Cognitive Science as a major with a minor in Economics.

Apart from his successful academic studies, he was granted with the Take Five Scholars Program provided by the University of Rochester. The program gives students opportunities to research additional disciplines and courses that might not otherwise be available to them. Levan Bokeria decided to broaden his insights into the recent history of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The young scholar was invited to conduct research at the laboratories of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, USA. With leading neuroscientists, Levan tried to understand data related to human performance in a particular task and researching perceptual imagery. He made his master studies at the Donders Institute in the Netherlands. His research focused on mice.

Levan Bokeria is a son of the Georgian politician Giga Bokeria. He was a civil rights activist in the 1990s and early 2000. After the Rose Revolution in Georgia, he became a Member of Parliament initiating a number of laws to improve human rights in Georgia. Giga Bokeria worked as a deputy Foreign Minister and a secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia. Currently, he is one of the leaders of the opposition political party European Georgia.

His mother and Levan Bokeria’s grandmother Nana Alexandria is a famous Georgian chess player. Alexandria was awarded with the Woman International Master title in 1966 and the Woman Grandmaster title in 1976. She was a USSR Women's Champion for several times.
