Georgian adoptee of the shaman speaks about indigenous Americans
Georgian PhD in History and researcher of History and Life of Indigenous peoples of the Americas Mikheil Barnovi explored the Apache reservation in 2014. Shaman or the father of the tribe adopted Georgian researcher and gave him a name of “Suus Spini”. Suus Spini stands for a morning star. The father had to pray all night before the ceremony of adoption.

Mikheil was interested in the books about indigenous peoples of the Americas. That is why he decided to devote his
life to the research. He chose the Apache tribe due to Geronimo. Geronimo (1829-1909) was a leader of the tribe. He was fighting against the government of America. After knowing about the leader, Mikheil fall in love with these warrior people.

Mikheil won the scholarship of Shota Rustaveli Scientific Foundation in 2014. He embarked on carrying out a doctoral research at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, the USA. The scholarship gave him a possibility to visit the reservation several times. At first, the people didn’t want to communicate with him but then step by step, Mikheil made it to earn their trust.

Whilst living in the reservation, Mikheil fitted his schedule to the lifestyle of his adopter family. The grandmother used to wake up in the early morning. She would wake the children up for breakfast. After breakfast, Mikheil would go to different families and interview them with the help of the grandmother.

Indigenous peoples of the Americas

According to the Georgian researcher, indigenous peoples of the Americas have their own autonomy. They do not comply with the rules of the state. They possess their own constitution and the federal government. The people wear ordinary clothes and both men and women have long hair as a mark of their identification.

Their traditions and old customs are only revived during ritual ceremonies. They tend to dress up in traditional clothes on such occasions. One of the rituals of the people is the celebration of girls reaching full ages. They give feasts and special dance shows under the supervision of the shaman. The girls are supposed to live in a separated tent for several days. During this time, people say certain prayers for the girls.

They catch up with the developments of modern civilization. Modern houses, technology, road, water, gas and electric systems, radio, TV, Wi-Fi, mobile phones are common things in the reservation. They own schools and are allowed to continue with their studies in the colleges of different cities.

Descents of the people are traced by the maternal line. They usually marry the members of the tribe but there are some mixed marriages too. The official religion of the tribe is Christianity which is blended with the elements of pre-Christian beliefs.

The Apache reservation

The government of the USA provides them with hospitals, police, post offices, supermarkets, emergency services, casinos and pensions. All these places employ only the local people and the profits are all directed to the development of the reservation. The Apache tribe faces a dilemma over whether to preserve their customs or to join the American lifestyle.
